A lot of people will call my car a "cheque book car" but I know the blood and sweat that I have put in to it so couldn't give two hoots about those types.

I don't ever care mate .. it is what it is at the end of the day .
Ive always tried to do 98% of the work on all my cars even fitting tyres lol but now i see it as a mugs game lifes to short I get people who I trust to do stuff these days lol
But I see it if you have had most of the input and spannered most of it you own the build

That comes with getting older Jay as it becomes more a chore than fun.
Mine was built by tuner but worked flat out to pay for it
Good point, you see "built not bought" stickers but not..."I grafted to pay someone to build it better than I could"....might be quite a long bumper sticker though.

My mate does most of the work on my cars as I simply dont have the in depth knowledge like he does or the tools.
Saying that as mentioned above, I have to work my ass off to pay for it so its swings and roundabouts - i personally couldnt care less what anyone thinks as its my car and i will do what i want to it - like the changing the mirrors lol
it would take me a day to change all 4 discs and pads at my house so its better for me to go to work and earn a days wages then pay someone else who can do it in half the time and still be 50-100 quid up.
to me it makes no difference if you've done all the spannering yourself or not. the end result is still down to you.
Built. No doubt about it. There are always going to be specialised jobs that are impossible to do around special tools, practicality etc. Your vision, you spec. You have spent 100s of hours on her both hands on and in research, can't be seen as bought as the only element of that is the parts purchased, who ever does the work has to buy the parts, no getting around it,
I’m classing mine as built lol. I do all the work myself apart from building the engine but at the numbers I’m after that’s a very specialist job. I’ll fit it and I’ve done everything else. But some people don’t have the ability or room to work on there own cars. As long as you have been involved and interested in what’s actually gone on what dose it really matter.
Cars have many very specialist areas like paint and body. Heavily tuned engines. Mapping. Transmission. Suspension set ups. Fabrication. Definitely not always possible to do everything your self to a high standard. Obviously there is the odd few out that but many more who just think they can lol

When I am at a show I have a big specc sheet on my windscreen so people know whats been done to it and its amusing when some people who think they are the experts stand there criticising this and that to their mates. Most of the time they are clueless and in reality probably jealous of my Saff!! As you say its your car and you have it set up the way you want it and if other people don't like it stiff shit!!

I used to notice this with my 3dr at shows

Std turbo which made me laugh as it has a t66 on it

This it i just love driving them now lol but when I said about input into the car Matts and Tobys car are worlds apart to how there modified and built and having built many cars over the years I love detail and its that what does it for me.
You look both the cars and the amount of of input thats put into the finished detail is great and sets cars apart ,Any mong can bolt shiney tin and wheels to a car but being original is hard a challenge but the essence of it
My lads Focus. All the specialist bits like the cage, engine, loom and gearbox were done professionally but the rest has all been bought and fitted by us.
3 years in the making but nearly done now
This saying has been around so long now I remember 20 yrs ago when I had my s2 I stripped it to bare with a Haynes and a Halfords socket set and rebuilt it you do get a buzz knowing you put it all together as long as it stays together
But I wasn't all I built this I love project cars always have they all take massive effort stress and cost I don't think you can truelly put it in a bracket it is what it is sombodies creation you either like it or you don't and as long as it's what you want happy days
bigdel. Your Son looks like he has been doing a cracking job on his Focus (with help from you) which is what Dad's do! I am currently helping my Son do a lot of work on his Subaru Impreza WRX STI. His car is next to my garage where I keep my Saff which is handy. Should be around 370bhp when its finished.

Yep, it's just what we do...
I do enjoy it though, especially as I missed out on doing the same stuff with my dad who I lost when I was only 20. We're looking for around 450+ from it, so should be a beast when done
Keep plugging on with the Scooby, it'll all come together eventually, at least you get to keep your garage, I stuck the Cossie in storage over winter so he could carry on in the warm

Correction, most are financed up more than they can pay back anytime soon. Everything from wheels/air/finance/someone to fit it all most likely paid for by student loans/plastic/bank loans/bank of dad.
Gone are the days when you'd see magazine cars when someone's done something interesting in the shed, its now a case of who can fit the biggest rims on the lowest car.
Makes you laugh when a set of wheels cost more than some quite nice cars.

just because I can’t do it my self doesn’t mean I can’t pay for mods to enjoy a car more or put my own spin on it.
I think theres to much snobbery and blagging with it.
I would love to be able to sit back and look at a job well done by my self but I’ll stick to changing wiper blades and light bulbs

His Scooby is also in a garage next to mine where before it was just parked on the street. It is nice when you can work on cars with your Son and we go to shows together as well. My Daughter also loves my Saff and she has driven it a few times although I did'nt let her go above 120 mph and not without me in it as well!!

Same it will be my last and I want it the best it can be and safe as it will be a capable car and I have kids to think about I will say though all the best laid plans and all that it's harder than you think to have something built yes you can collect a big pile of parts but be prepared it's takes longer than you think my focus and cossy left on a transporter 3 yrs ago it's hard to keep the passion alive
I've only done mine because I can ..and it's been great to spend some time in the garage to myself ...a kind of therapy.
That’s half the fun tinkering lol. I can’t wait to put mine together when I get my engine. But I do still have the odd bit to get on with! the building is half the fun. At the moment I’m sorting the gearbox out that’s going in it. Just in the process of ordering the bits from the states
If your willing to get stuck in and do as much as you can then I'd say you can claim it's built. Not everyone can build an engine or do paintwork. But if you still do a lot of work then fair play.
For me personally I'll continue to do as much as possible on my toys because it's my hobby but my next daily will without a doubt be getting left with someone else to do work and modifications while I'm at work.
