from OAP pete.....ive wrote loads hear on the site....do have a look look back...written on the entire "K & KE" Bosch injection system....you would appear to have a fault on 5th electric fuel injector....i can tell you the test procedue if you cant find it hear on the site...what i can say is do not keep cranking as injector timer will shut down the 5th injector for safety...and will need 15 mins to reset...do look back on my write ups....im just out of Hospital due to a Fall i had [ now 83 ]....now lost the use of my left arm...manage " just " to write this...its all hear the test etc..again these cars are great starters...as neat fuel is spayed in manifold on cold first start...so 4 sparks..engine starts. Just more info should you be a new owner .....you state it runs fine once started...so when cold...does it burst into life sounding good on all 4 cylinders....but stop after 2/3 seconds...wont re-start...or do you not even get that ?...need to know...as the 5th injector will always get the engine started...its what happens after could be a problem. The 5th injector is controled by the "Thermo timer located rear of engine.."Brown plug"...it has its own internal Heater as well has " Hot water " from engine...which once hot cuts the "negative " circuit to the 5th...as must not activate once engine hot....also if the 5th injector has fault ...not delivering neat fuel...then each time you operate the starter motor a "positive + " is sent to Timer to heat its internal heater...and shut down injector for safety...if your engine does burst into life fine ...but stop...then there is no fault with the 5th....the pressure actuator should take over with a increase in pressure....need to no more. It was absolutely fine before i parked it up for a while
at first i thought it was out of fuel as was extremely low (parked at work ) if i flick the ignition over usually it will fire or at least pop once or twice then if i continue to crank in 5 sec intervals it will eventually fire and run then no issue drives fine all power is there untill its left to go cold then its the same issue thanks

Do make certain its got plenty of fuel......as the cold start injector is on the main fuel pressure line....ie....85/90 psi.....to test injector has 12v at it...with the engine fully cold, unplug the injector...use test lamp or meter on the 2 terminals...crank engine you should see cranking voltage at plug.. 10 / 12volt...if not can advise....but do do make sure plenty of fuel in tank in case the fuel gauge is incorrect ...

Really the next time it fails to burst into life....then do the checks of voltage at 5th injector.....also remove injector...place in suitable container....crank engine check good spray of fuel...be safe hear as injector on main pressure line...as ive said also check the injector plug is clean and the Terminals are a good fit on the injector....as well as the Timer itself...these plugs do give intermitant conections. Me again had chance to have a go on the car

Today it cranked forever i took off the air filter and put my hand over the flap on the metering head and cranked it it fired up and ran but smelt funny

Could it be as daft as old fuel ? As once its running its perfect or its not pulling enough fuel through

Your by passing a TEST.....While its cold...set up the Test ive wrote on the 5th injector plug...cold engine there should be 12V at the Plug on cranking....if not then there is a Fault and if wont start...so more tests to be made..ie...Black/yellow wire at 5th plug must be live on cranking engine..OK...IF OK then it will be the negative for the injector missing...this negative come from the Timer rear of engine [ colure brown/white..OK...so putting short wire into the brown/white terminal...other end to earth BE VERY VERY SURE TO PUT THE TEST WIRE INTO THE BROWN/WHITE terminal ONLY,,,,,,SEVERE DAMAGE WILL RESULT IF NOT ...is now the negative there on cranking...OK...so there is a fault in the Timer. thats the full test of the fifth injector.... pushing the metering flap...by-passes the test..as your putting some fuel [ not enough ] into the cylinders. getting the voltage tests as explained first......if all OK....then injector could be blocked.....needs to come out and tested for spray of fuel............... Right its deffonthe cold start as younsaid thanks

No power on crank

But if ibput the earh wire to earth and give the injector a split second of 12v it fires instantly so for some reason im getting no power

Would it help to mention its an xr3i with rst conversion done many years ago im assuming all loom was transplanted as it ran lovely up to me burning the live starter wire out and parking it up

OK xr3i conversion !!!...OK...on what you say do i take it you have run a seperate wire to the starter solinoid..[ small excite terminal on starter ]...now ive no idea whats gone on in the past conversion.....But hear is how it should be....The starter excite circuit is a very important circuit...as when you turn the Key from Ignition on...to next turn starter...not only does the starter get excite...BUT BUT...also the cold start Timer....Plus the 5th injector both get the excite...Plus Terminal 24 on the Black ECU tied up with increasing fuel pressure......This is done within the loom from new. if you have run a new wire....then you have by passed esentual items...or may be who ever done the conversion was not up on the RS Turbo system...in which case it would have very very poor Cold start from when you purchased the Car..so need to now....then can tell you what you need to do to put it right....this pointing now as no 12v to 5th injector .or timer....hence lots of cranking to start..also the Safety circuit will not kick in to stop 5th injector working. Peter

Thanks

I believe it was a full reshell as i have the donor car details in the history so its all rst i believe except the shell and id as its on xr3i id

It was fine up untill i burnt the starter exite wire out by plugging it into the wrong terminal near the alternator then my mate was moving it diddnt know i had taken the wire off ( was putting a new crimp on end and plugged it back into the bullet connector but the wrong 1 ) he cranked the car with a screwdriver on the starter and the loom to the alternator burnt

I replaced that but no crank so ran a fresh wire to the starter from ignition switch thats when i believe my issues started so your reply makes sense now

Thanks alex

Yes you need to get the original starter solinoid wire connected back in with your new wire...that will bring every thing back into play. Peter
