Default cat D but doesnt know why....?

is there any way of finding out exactly why a car was a cat D insurance repair? the current owner/seller claims to not know although as its an expensive car you think hed have wanted to know before buying it himself!

he must know then and is denying any knowledge as surely no one would buy a Ł25000 second hand car without doing a hpi check first !
theres no gov. sites that will tell you the history?

Cat d wouldn’t put me off but someone being deliberately vague with details might. Just check it out properly.

does an hpi check detail exactly what the problem was for it to be declared cat d or just that it was an uneconomical repair?
