Well today my ST170 went in for it's MOT, I actually thought it was tomorrow, as I always do it one month in advance. But the MOT tester assured me it was today.
So a couple of hours later he comes and see's me, telling me the car has passed with no advisory's.
What a great read and lovely car . I bought a st170 a few months ago and must say its the best fun ive in a car for a long time now (due to 20 years of dad cars ) . Hope i get mine looking as clean as yours

Great news Paul. Not so lucky this side of Dorset, mine failed on rear arm bushes, emissions, and front subframe corrosion
front subframe being the tricky one of course, as it's the places it bolts to the body and you're not allowed to weld it there
So, bought a replacement sub from the bay, and just need to find the time to take the whole front end apart to fit it
Hopefully someone will be able to help you, as I've never driven a GTi turbo. I understand they have less power on "paper" but are in actually fact pretty close. I would of thought the Golf would be more tuneable given that it has a turbo.
As for chassis handling etc, I suspect a good clean ST170 would show it the way home.
A lot depends on what you want from a car really, the VAG scene is pretty big, as is the Ford family, reliability of both cars depends on how well they've been treated, and the costs of running each will be around the same I recon.
If you are looking at the ST170, then please check for rust on the inner rear arches, as it's a hidden spot for it. Also check the IMRC is working, located on the bulk head/fire wall, as these often fail. Fuel pumps are a known issue and will cause fuel starvation on low fuel level running, like tiny flat spots and miss fires. The dual mass flywheel is also an issue on the ST, but mine has been making a rattling noise for 5+ years, and still hasn't let go or slipped lol.
Just another update, as I've had a few personal messages asking about the ST170. The car sold a few months back, which was hard to do after 5+ great years of driving and fixing it. I'm not moving away from Ford, as I still work at a Ford dealership, and who knows what maybe around the corner
Lol I just sold mine and got a 2013 st3 Fiesta . Great car but needs just that little extra kick up the arse , you doing anything with yours or leaving it standard , iam going stage 4 330 bhp

At the moment I'm concentrating on my Toyota Carina project, but once the brakes, suspension, and a few "bits" are done, then I'll look at the future
Such a sad video, not that the st has gone it was the way it was narrated.
I understand the problems of having multiple cars but will you not find it very difficult doing major mods to your only car?
Still think you should leave the Toyota as a nice daily and start another project, got to be worth a thought

Aye, got to agree with the Count, sad day Paul and yes I would find it difficult not having a daily as well as my project car.
Thanks for the words fellas, and listening back to it I realize how sad it does seem, that wasn't my intention. All thoughts and comments are considered, and I agree, it's going to be rather hard to have my project car as my daily.
The Carina I just want to make a little better all round, driving on bicycle tyres wasn't fun, and the exhaust had broken so it needed to be replaced anyway.
I do work at a Ford dealership, so if something comes up that takes my fancy, well who knows
Thanks again to the few people that are still watching my ST170 video, and sending me messages, I really appreciate it, and I still miss the car. My Carina is coming along nicely, although finding parts is next to impossible, so most are being made to order, and at some point this year, I'll have to take it off the road and have all the brakes made BIGGER. I'm toying with the idea of a Fiesta ST as my daily, but time will tell.
Anyway, if you haven't seen my Toyota thread, here's a link to the first video I did on it a while ago.
