I just picked up a spare sump myself for a dummy engine set up, amazing how prices for all these bits are going up and up

Did you get a price for your skyline box rebuild yet mate?

Nice

Enjoy you break mate

The prices of these boxes secondhand has got silly now the us import ban on them no longer applies! Between Ł700 & Ł1000 for one now and a full rebuilt quote I heard someone on the skyline owners forum mention was Ł1800 so it's just not worth it hence why I am going to go the sequential route with PGS in Finland later this year

I see a temp sender, will the cooler be linked to run only at certain temp?

I thought it would be a similar setup. Will you still run shockproof oil in it?

Does it need a gearbox cooler?

Have you measured the oil temps?

Surely if it is thermostatically controlled it doesn't matter if he needs it or not, it would kick in if needed and if not it is just a little redundant weight?

my point being fitting equipment without even checking the data as to whether its even needed.

well all I can say to that is last year we did Bedford autodrome the GT Track and I did 110 miles on track and it was the hottest day of the year and by the end of the day I was struggling to get the car out of gears when on track . And trust me I was giving it all I could . Well a week went past when we had the car home so I did a road test all was good . And sins then Iv done Malory park 2 times . oulton park all day no problems and iv never changed the oil in the gearbox so in my eyes I'm happy to put it on the car .
As said befor iv got this set up on my diff and from time to time I do here the pump kick in . And if Martin hadland had one on his skyline box then it was there for a reason

So guesswork really.

You get more heat in the transfer, so 2 x pumps and coolers?

Even the works teams removed pumps/coolers for the likes of cooler countries, only safari/Australia etc had transmission cooling.

If I needed my Skyline box cooling on the rally car it would have it. Currently never needed It, and I have measured temps on rallies.

What would be the negative effect of running a cooler. I know the oil won't reach viscosity, but will it affect the box operation that much? Surely if it runs on a stat it will be fine?

Too cool is as bad as too hot.Sluggish synchros, increased friction, slow shift, higher bearing loads. There are optimums for all components, that is why measuring is best before adding weight/spending hard earner on something you probably might not need.

Add a couple of temp strips to the box case and see what you record, no need to drill/tap/wire or plumb a sensor in for the first instance.

as im in Australia and will be running one of these boxes i will get some aluminium dash fittings welded on my adapted bellhousing before i fit it just incase i have to run a cooler, then i wont have to remove the box to fit it up. If i dont need it i will just put caps on the dash adapters.

It won't run any cooler than a normal box if the thermostat is set as the system will be closed and pump off.

I can understand a works team removing it for cold countries as every kilo helps win a race but equally it goes to prove that the quick boys DID run coolers in hotter climates.

No but we did see 40 degrees this year and 100 miles on Bedford is pretty hard on a car, in fact an a beginner probably works a car harder than Senna did. If he doesn't generate the heat then thermostat stays closed, all he is doing is dragging some air and a few kilos?

I am not trying to be clever, my point is, if he wants it then do it, no harm.

You are not even close to a competitive event doing a track day, trust me I've done both.

I think you are dreaming if you think a beginner can push anywhere near a racer. Not ever 5/10ths

Let's not argue for the sake of it, My point is that a closed thermostat makes no difference to the gearbox than one without a cooler other than some weight.

A beginner will change gear more times, over Rev a car more often ask more of an engine than an expert driver and over drive a car, that is what I am saying.

I have done both too and I have seen many a poor driver with a race licence.

Agreed.

I just hate seeing people spending hard earned on things that are not needed. Just a personal bug bear.😉

I know you do but sometimes spending the money and trying stuff is 90% of the hobby. Half the stuff we do is a waste, God knows my car would probably be better to drive on the road with half the cost and the over the top crap removed, it is the journey that it fun.

Thanks to everyone for there input on wot iv decided to do to my gearbox . As Toby has said these cars are awer hobbies and that's why we have them .

I love messing with the car I made the car wot it is today all my self . I modded the shell to take a 4x4 cosworth my self . I worked it all out my self I did all the welding my self I then decided to put a skyline gearbox in . I modded all the gearbox myself I made the jig to line up the bell housing myself i made all the central push clutch myself i even made myself the front and rear pops for the car and had them balanced properly Iv since had a sliding prop made for it for peace mind

And if I raced It might be a different matter and only parts that was needed would be on the car . But I don't so if I won't to paint it pink I will .

And as to saying i can not drive well have you ever seen me drive No . have you ever been in my car No . So why can you judge me with out noing the facts .

I know this is your hobby and a good job you have made of it too, but its doing something that is not needed because you don't know if you do is a little like making an adapted to have 4 wheels at the rear, you don't need it.
If you had zero grip, and had proven it then 4 wheels at the rear might improve what you had.

I wasn't commenting on your driving, I was commenting on the comparison between you and a pro driver Caddyshack mentioned. You nor I are Prodrivers, as good as you may think you are, you are not a prodriver, just like I am not.

So am i right in assuming you can fit the 3.9 ratio gears in a standard cosworth front diff? or have you just put new gears in a 3.9 ratio diff? I ask as i have 2 spare diffs one std cosworth ratio and one 3.8ratio from a 4x4 sierra but not cosworth. If the gears are available i may buy a spare set just incase.

hi mate the diff casings are the same from wot I no and I run a 3.9 front diff from a twin cam . As it's the only front gear set that matches the 3.9 supra diff in the rear the diff has been done by GEARS on an exchange bace as my diff smashed it self to bits
