Default MASSIVE thanks to Jim galbally.

Some of you may have read my technical thread here that i neede dhelp with getting a safe reliable internet portal into my reception:
https://passionford.com/forum/general-car-related-discussion/242250-technical-pc-question-restricting-access.html

Well Jim galbally called me up and discussed the possibility of me installing a "Thin Client". Since i didnt know what one was, Jim asked me to trust him and he sent me a thin client, fully installed and configured allready. When i plugged it in and switched it on, it went right to my company wesbite from boot up. No action needed and teh user has no access to any other sites at all.

The cost? Zero.

Jim, thanks ever so much, favour noted and awaiting repayment at your leisure mate.

Things like this remind me of the good that internet Forums can bring, as i met Jim on the Forums and class him as a mate, weve had some good laughs over the years. (Even The eyebrow episode) Top man.

Fantastic; very good of you that Jim. Thrash his car around the ring next time you go Jim, show him what an M5 can do.

Fantastic; I wouldn't of suggested it if I hadn't read so much about his great driving.

would you mind explaining what a 'thin client' is as most of us in the ford industry have never seen one

Thin clients are great, they should be used more often but people are really unfamilar with them.

Good man is that Jim geezer

PMSL at the gravel trap pic. I can confirm that his Nurburgring is substantially better than that pic would suggest

a thin client is basically a cut down PC. it has very low processing power, a small ammount of memory, no hard drive etc. etc.

theyre designed to just basically boot windows and load some very easy applications like Internet explorer, citrix, remote desktop/terminal server etc.

theyre most useful in environments like this where you want a public access internet terminal, or in organisations which use a pure citrix/terminal server environment. you invest a lot of money in the servers and then buy these cheap and easy to maintain thin clients

we bought a load then realised that the app they needed to run (a CRM web app) was mega CPU intensive and queries took 1min + so ripped em all out and replaced with desktops in 1 week since we'd opened em up we couldnt send em back

right, but you must still need to somehow restrict what internet sites they can access somehow?

nobody get my joke about never having seen a ford owner that isn't fat then?

That would be done either through your web filtering software or your proxy. Not through the thin client, at least that's the way in our office environment.

Dunno about just using the one machine as above, suppose it would be an XPe machine. Ours run Windows CE which sucks as you can't really put any applications on the client itself.

We run a bunch of thin clients, Wyse WinTerms in fact. They come in a few different flavours, some being bigger/more powerful than others, and we use a Terminal Server. The thin clients simply run a Remote Desktop Connection which we have pointed at the Terminal Server and means they can use MS Office etc without the need for a PC.

the internet access was taken care of via a "bodge"

the DNS was pointed toa fake DNS server, so all DNS lookups will fail. I then added the websites stu needs to the HOSTS file on the PC, so lookups for just those sites will work

i actually fucked it up tho as i forgot to add maps.google.com so none of his "find us" pages worked

the thing auto-logs in as a std user, and calls a batch file which repeatedly funs iexplore in kiosk mode pointing to the website. if anyone closes iexplore the batch file relaunches it.

it's not actually restricted as such, if you know what youre doing you could get past most of it, but it's done so that to the average joe they wouldnt be able to play around so it should discourange anyone from poking firther.

plus the great thign about a thin client is that if a customer does fuck it up, you just reboot it and it's all back as it was working fine
