Default Technical PC question.... restricting access

I have put a PC in the reception area, with the intention of allowing customers to browse our company website.

The question is:
How do i stop them doing anything BUT browsing our company website on it?

you could restrict access using parent control will stop them browsing "dodgy" sites, but that wont stop them using it for other "normal sites"
as how to limit it to just one site dunno.

i'm sure there is software you buy out there that makes it so ALL you can do is browse your site. Which means you cant do anything in windows or browse anything else. dont know what it is though.

don't connect it to the internet - browse your 'site' offline using files on the hard drive

Simple fix would be to remove the DNS servers from your network card/wireless card settings and just having an entry in your local HOSTS file for your website.. that'd fool most people. PM/call me for help

Could piss about with local policies until you get the desired affect.

the dns option is about the best, as after time the local web site will be out of date

you can do it on a local policy, as we do at work, but we have a proxy server so you can just remove the setting and point to a local address

personally i'd remove DNS as said before.

also might be wise to buy a thin client termianl rather thana normal PC. i just happen to have an entre storeroom full of spare ones

now, what to swap one for... hmmmm

Removing DNS and using the local security policy to stop changing it back is probably the simplest solution.....

they've done the same thing at work for a few pc's

you can only access one site and everything that goes with it (google maps) on that machine as everything else just comes up with "you do not have permission to view this web page, contact the it department if yuo think this has been done in error"

don't know how you would do it on your machine though so perhaps not the best advice

Exactly what I was going to say

Also, boot the machine and load your website, set Internet Explorer to fullscreen (F11), disable the right mouse button and remove the keyboard.
Unless your site requires keyboard input at any time, if so local policies could come into play.

So you think he should interview every potential customer first to see if he can trust them before he allows them to potentially post on forums from his IP address?
Wow, really useful suggestion.

Downside to that one potentially, is he then has to keep updating the machine, but yes I agree its the very easy way to restrict people really.

We talk about restricting a PC so only a certain website can be used/displayed, however as Stu wont be monitoring the usage while the customer is on it, he will need it "locked down" as well.

Regedit can be a very destructive tool.

To clarify, i dont want them to have access to anything at all other than the business websites.
(IE: I dont want them messing about deleting files from windows for a giggle.)

To answer whoever asked "Why cant they just ask you?"
We are extremely busy and often customers will spend 20 mins with us asking what can be chipped, and going through a whole list of cars they "Could" buy. The worst culprits are the friends of people who are waiting to have their car done, so while we are trying to work on it, they drill us to see what can be done. Understandable, but time consuming.

Whilst this is good from an enquiry sense, its very bad from a time management sense, so i thought i will put our websites
http://www.motorsport-developments.co.uk/ http://www.evolutionchips.com/ online in reception so they can answer all their own questions via our very powerfull application database. http://www.evolutionchips.com/chipsearch.asp and maybe even generate some business.

The database is another reason it cant be browsed offline as easily as some websites, as its not all just HTML, theres a lot of background operations with the databases.

Thanks for your help so far folks.

hadn't thought about that i should have because i know from my own website that it's much easier to be online and check the database to see what can and can't be mapped

At work anything 'adult' is filtered, and anything important needs administrative rights to delete....i'm not exactly sure how this works though but it works well.

as another AMAZING idea though, why not connect it to a meter, and have them pay to browse the web Ł2 an hour or summat will soon add up

thats 1 pretty good suggestion have used it before! to add to this you could create a "user" account with no permissions so they then cant modify the host file. also set your dns on the network card to somthing ficticious (sp) e.g 100.100.100.100

also dont forget to put a password on the administrators account!

restrict IE as described, and in change HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon\shell from explorer.exe to "iexplore.exe" (or firefox etc) and have the home page set to your site.... you'd also need to disable task manager in local security policies to stop people just running explorer.

Thats why billabong told you to run IIS, so you can still access the database from dynamic scripts.
