I'm in the US, and have built a few 302s. If you need help locating parts or coming up with a combo that will rip the treads off the tyres, let me know.

Just out of curiosity, have you considered going Fuel Injection?

A carb intake manifold can be modified to run fuel rails and injectors by your local machine shop.

I'd suggest going twin T3 series turbos, single intercooler with dual inlet, single outlet.

As for the 302s cracking at 500 hp. I've seen one crack in two, right down the middle, at over 950. But it was a high compression supercharged engine sprayed with Nitrous.

If you run the correct Compression Ratio, forged pistons, forged rods, forged crank, you can run 750 hp all day. Just as long as you set the AF ratio correctly.

To the guy who said turbos have too much lagg, not enough torque, eats fuel too fast, etc...... you were using the wrong turbo.

For a little history on me, I joined the board to research the possibility of using a Sierra Cosworth Turbo cyl head one of my cars, a Ford 2.3L powered mustang. just so you don't all get ticked at me for jumping into the middle of a thread and throwing some BS. I have experience with 302s, so can help.

few replies here!!

The holley is for sale mate, send me an email, n i will send you some info n pics. if you are intested you can make me an offer.

As for fuel injection, i fancy throttle bodies. but they are expensive, n i would need direct port nos injection then which is also expensive!!

The CR is gonna be 10:1, no turbo, forged slugs (possibly hyperereutectics) with +30 overbore. I have a crower nitrous cam, cant remember the spec! N a very seasoned block! I am using hardened push rods with rocker guide plates and alu roller rockers, crane double valve springs of correct rate for cam, with titanium caps. breath!! Havent considered rods yet, need a bit more info, n gotta buy arp studs/bolts throughout.

Twas me sed that about turbos!! JUst experience from my old impreza!!

Thanks to everyone though for the support i may finish the old girl one day......

well, after running 9.0s in the 1/4 mile in a car with a 3.8L V6 and one big turbo, turbolagg can be almost entirely eliminated.

I thought they were horse sheet as well, after driving a few with massive lagg.

But then after building a few with the right combo, I found that it can be eliminated to the point of not even noticing it. I would never have thought of using one had I not driven one that was built right.

Think about a full steel body american 2 door sedan lifting the front wheels at the launch. Boost was hitting full tilt at 2500 rpms.

Pushing 750 hp without forced induction? Unless you are building a stroker (at least 347) with a billet crank forged rods and pistons, and AFR -3 heads race ported with an aftermarket ECU, and a pro street intake manifold, and then plan to spray a 300 shot to hit 750, it's simply not gonna happen.

What I honestly suggest to you is this, make friends with someone who has a 500 hp turbo car. if they have the ability to make 500 hp, they should have made it mostly lagg free.

Not sure how test drives work on that side of the pond, but here if you BS your way enough, drive in a new car worth more than 30K (US) then you can usually arrange a test drive in some serious machinery. I've BS'd my way into a 911, an NSX a XK8 and corvettes and so on. Would never have been able to afford one the day I drove them though.

by the way, what heads do you plan to use?

this will make or break your entire build up.

if you need help here also, just ask.

EDIT: ok just went back and noticed the on a tight budget part.

Well, if you're hoping for 700 hp on Junkyard parts not including a turbo or SC, good luck to ya.

You are not going to find aftermarket heads that will reach 700 hp in any junkyard in the US, I bet the chances of finding a set there would be a little slimmer.

I built my first turbo car using junkyard parts. I reached 450 hp with a 4 cyl. But I also lucked out finding a guy selling off his stash of hipo parts.

I can find rotating assemblies that will get you to 347 for around 500 bucks US. That's like 280 pounds. THen I can find AFR heads that'll flow to where you need for about 2000 US, or about 1125 Pounds. Then you'll need an intake, and machine work etc.....

Sorry, the RWD 302 Escort is cool as hell, but 700hp is out of your budget, unless you go with heads ported to hell and back and turbos on top of a forged set of rods and pistons, and a forged crank. And that is your entire budget and change.

Yes if you put 500 hp through a stock motor, it will grenade after a while. That's why they make forged cranks.

If you want to stroke it out to 347 or somewhere else, and then get a good port job on the heads, you'll see really decent power.

well, I've been around a few boards, and it's the same no matter where you go, or where you are from.

If it was that easy to get 700 hp from a 302, everyone in the US would have 700 hp super cars.

i arent planning on running 700bhp all the time, just with the gas at the strip. plan was, see what breaks and replace as necessarry, i only expest to see 300 - 400 bhp off gas.

My heads came with the engine, they are the smog heads with air injectors, however i have ported out the exhaust jets and done quite a lot of other porting in the valve throat area mainly. I intend getting some new or second hand alu heads when finances allow, and once i have shaken the car down.

i cant us turbos either way unfortunately, just dont have room due to where i put the engine!!

Thanks for all the tips though, but the engine build is about a year away yet at least!!

You can see 300 with those heads, 400 with some aftermarket heads.

Throwing 300 hp worth of juice on a 400 hp smallblock...... well that is asking, more like begging, pleading & praying for the thing to split.

You can add a main girdle, it will help out a bit.

Have you not thought of putting the turbos in front of the engine? If you get shorty style headers and turn them around so they point up and forward, you can mount the turbos there. Never Driven a 911 Turbo, heard they don't have too much lagg tho, so not sure what happened to your impreza.

Anyway, a nice stout 331 or 347 stroker should net you about 400 hp. But I'd go FI instead of Carburated.

Anyway, good luck with the whole thing.

Thank you colvin design, i appreciate your tips, and i dont know what i will do now really.

Kinda fancy droppin it in the crusher!!

May even end up with a 350 chevy in there, only stuck with the 302 to have a ford in a ford.

The old impreza was stock apart from a k&N panel, and a piston dump valve but the turbo seemed to come on all of a sudden. You know flat then woosh, drove an evo7 tonite n that was smooth, but felt very gutless to me, maybe it is just me!

The nitrous was gonna be injected in stages with a controller from trevor at the wizards of nos. Their systems are very gentle, and much more suffisticated than nos,nx etc. They allow much bigger hits.

Anyway we will see what happens, been running good ets in me capri last year, so the ecsy may just become a pure street car with less maximum power, seems a bit superflous now.

I do have a chap locally who builds racing (mainly circuit v8's) who recommended the 302 to me originally, so may see what he suggests.

Ive done a little work on the escy, so i will put a few pics up soon. Plus ive made a couple of changes to the capri so pics of that to follow too......
