Default cossie engine rebuild !!!, UPDATE 2/7/05, engines out pmsl

this is my first time playing with a cossie engine so ya i ya notice stuff wrong then tell me

its started out as a car i bought, all running fine, then i decided to run it with no oil and then the problems started

it got a very very knocky engine

anyway i decided that the best thing to do was rebuild it when i had a chance

then the fooking thing started to play up, i tried to fond the proiblem then one day it didnt wanna start

so as i had the hump i decided to strip it to get it back

as ya can see i taken off the inlet manifold as thats the first part im working on

then i thought about another idea , maybe i got a electrical problem, how can i fault find that though

i know

rip the fooking loom out

thats the hole that thew loom comes out of incase any of ya wanna know

so with the inlet manifold out of the car, being a bit chilly oputside and the missus not home as she went shopping i had a idea

strip the inlet in the house before she gets home

its a bit oily but im gonna clean all that then decide what im gonna do with it

more very very soon

well today i decided to remove the turbo , what a cooont of a job that was

thats how it started

inside the turbo looks like any other

after a right arse ache removing the bolts in the manifold i then discovered 7 of the 16 nuts where missing and what else ya notice,,,,,,,,

most of the studs have snapped but lucky no in the head , wonder how this happened ?????

well the turbo damper looks fooked , bit of wear and tear there

bit dirty in there, think i need to take all that burn crap out somehow

the manifold is off but my heay wrap for the zorst is fooked , ah well, another thing to buy on the list, only got it as this happened

who said carbon dont melt, it fooking stinks where it does too

turbos off to so only one thionk left to do now

stick me tools away

oh and i got a nioce delivery direct from germany today too

alot cheeper than 200 quid too

and a few more closer piccys of me ported head, well its ment to be anyway , looks the same to me

tommorow im gonna remove all me tanks and at some point i expect to actually remove the engine and then i can actually rebuild it

also piccys of the loom whe thats done aswell

damo i got a mate whos a proper engineer , he makes tools when he cant find what he looking for

its really no different to a cvh and dont let my mobile tool box fool ya, theres others, not snapon but i got enough to build a engine,

remember apart from the head its a pinto and i also having rwd havew a advantage of not as much fooking about to get the engine out

ill have the bay totally stripped tommorow as today being the missus b.day i was panned from roadside rebuilds

oh and unless snapon do a selection of micrometers to match there verniers and a DTI gauge then i would run out and buy some , uts the measurung i was worried about tbh

i bet loads of people on here have made the same stuff as me, and lots will of made better stuff.

your problem is that ur scared to use imperial tools sometimes.
if its a 13mm bolt thats tight always try the 1/2" first.
its only 0.3 mm small but that can make all the difference.

ok guys here a update , what have i done

we this is when i started today, thats whats in the bay

now i wondered what i could remove and still allow me to change my mind if i got scared

whats this i see

i start with the easy bit first
sorted ,

i wonder what the radiator has a cable tie in it , let me give it a little tug just to confirm

cable ties aint very strong btw
still not too bad

hang about how to i tell if the cam belt is tight enough

looks ok from here, let me check the tension and how its on the pulled

schnazbot , what have i done , it just came off in me hand honest, i never pulled it or undone a single bolt, honest

oh well, asnthe cam pully is off,,,,,,, i wonder !!!!!

oh theres oil in there so the lifters much be fine i think , let me just wipe away the oil just incase

i have really gotta lern to leave the spanners alone

what have i done, it ruined, ive taken the cams out now,,,,,,,,,, guess im really gonna have to rebuild it now , i better close the bonnet before the missus looks out the window, she thinks im changing the spark plugs

im worried now

anyone wanna buy a cossie jigsaw

Ginge, taking the head off is the most scary bit after all you've done so far. You read the book three times, then check it again cos you're not 100% sure... and all the time you worry if you're doing it right or not.

Make sure you have a decent breaker bar too or you won't get the head bolts off, mine's three foot long and required a half decent pull on it. Making sure the splines are nice and cosy in the head bolt is a good idea too... you don't want to smooth those bolts to the point where you have to drill them out

Looking good so far, good luck

Ginge, keep the old head bolts, they will be handy when putting the head back on.

cut the tops off two of them with a good hacksaw, cut a groove at the top and screw them at opposite corners of the block.

Then drop the head gasket on, and use them to guide the head onto the block.

Then fit all other headbolts (new) and use a screwdriver to unscrew and pull the guides out.

ok things aint good now , the head even though never melted ect seems to be super skimmed

i soooooo should have left the head alone , didnt wanna see what i did

so im gonna see about getting the head face tig welded and then skimed for a new squish area

ah well, just means the rebuild is gona take longer

anyway heres the piccys

head bolts out

have a quick look at the head and what do i see, not looking good

i rub my eyes and have a closer look

i cry for a bit and then get brave and give the face a quick wipe

its fooked
closer look

its deffo deffo fooked

ah well, lets look at the block as the bores look fine and the pistons are being changed anyway so who cares if there fooked

quick wipe and guess what

there actually fooking fine, ok theres a tiny bit of valve kissing on the piston bit apart from that all is cool, there comming out anyway

well now all i need to do is take the block out and carry on

Quick Reply: cossie engine rebuild !!!, UPDATE 2/7/05, engines out pmsl
