Most places are crash repair shops, just ship them in, bodge them up ship them out and charge the insurance company, easy work for easy money.
Proper resto work needs skill and time that most of these places don't have. Even the lads that work in these places dont like doing lash up jobs as many take pride in their work, but its push push push.
I put a brand new shell, etc etc in a reputable shop years ago and did a deal with the owner to use it as a hospital job over a month or so. It sat there gathering dust untouched for months. Then the owner went on holiday and all the tossers in the shop booked their time against it so when he came back he tried to hit me for vast hours, and the job they did was dire. I got it out of there, paid him half what he was for asking based on a breakdown of the real time that would have been taken a painter mate provided me and had to get it finished elsewhere.
These shops all seem to be the same, genuine ones are like needles in a haystack

What a cunt. If it's the bodyshop owner leaving messages his final brain cell must have imploded from his own stupidity.
I'd offer to finish your welding Glenn but my garage is being moved and there's no where to store cars at the moment.

I can almost gaurantee the voicemails etc aren't from him glenn, he's not childish like that, whats happened is shitty, as ive already agreed, but he doesn't do stuff like that. But as for the police, could a neighbour be moaning cause its on your drive?? Legally its obviously allowed to be but ive had people complain about mine when its been on the garage, ha.

You've totally hot the nail on the head there m8, I worked in a bodyshop yrs ago as a valeter and my mate was a panel beater there,he was shit hot at his job and had restored quite a few old skool motors and he ended up getting the sack because according to them he took too long too complete jobs but he refused to bodge jobs. I know another panel beater who served his time in am ar**ld cla*k bodyshop and they were encouraged to use as much filler as they wanted rather than replace panels. And when they were refitting the likes of bumpers and arch liners etc if they couldn't get things to line up they would just cut the screws/bolts and glue the heads in place so it looked right
:-o couldn't believe that when I heard it but it was his own journeyman that told him to do it. Now that's fucking ruff

Just picked up on this thread. Gutted for you Glenn. Could you not get a couple of bodyshops to give you an estimate for the work thats been done so far? Then give Trading standards a call, they will give you advice with regards to taking them to small claims court. Ł1300 seems canny mental for whats been done, and anything you can recover to help get it finished is going to be a bonus.

Complicated, time consuming but fooking amazing! Off to america in march, then back over again a few months later for my training at infra red school, well worth it though. Feel free to pop round for a cuppa one night again, you can have a nosey at the new engine that's going in......turbo!!! Ha

I would like to say, good you have your car back Glenn. But a big shame you get it back in this condition ! Does he thread all his clients like this ??
And all those problems with 'getting his money and payment before work stuff' ?? It's only normal that you pay him after the work when the car is done.
I hope you get the car ready soon with some new help mate !
It's gonna be allright

I found out today that I was 100% right about this bloke going down on a monday night and doing the work to my car.
This bloke was getting paid 10 quid an hour and spending 2 hours a week on it and the bs owner was getting the other 15quid. Not bad for not doing anything. I found out this bloke hasnt been to the bs for6/7 weeks. The mk2 golf thats in the bs. Thats been there for 2 years apparently.

The golf has been there a bloody long time but again thats the same as mine, the owner works in the army i believe, so he pays a bit when he's back and gets more work done, then goes away again and repeats the cycle etc etc, thats a proper long termer, haha. And unfortunatley its back to work for me so i'll be gone for a while again, feel free to txt me tho glenn if i can help or you just fancy a cuppa dude, its been a while.

if I was doing a job on the side as a joiner id expect the client to either supply the materials needed or to pay me for them up front with either agreed instalments as the job progresses if its a long one or payment in full when the works complete. (not that I do jobs on the side mr taxman...im to old for that now)
I expect it would be hard to motivate yourself to work on something if you've had the cash up front and spent it especially if you have other cash jobs coming in all the time.
ive had quite a few problems over the years on my projects, the worst being the cosworth engine conversion in my bmw. quoted 2 weeks all in. 17 weeks later I had arranged to take it back regardless with my mate at the weekend but luckily for him he phoned me on the Thursday before to say it was ready.
once you've had issues with anywhere I would never allow them to continue as any simmering bad feeling would likely effect the quality of work they then did.
ive never met a garage or bodyshop that works in real time yet.always underestimating the time

I have tried to refrain from posting on your rebuild Glenn but its just total bollocks.
I wish you were closer to me.When I did a rebuild colour change etc on a Sapphire back in about 95 my mate who now has his own successful business did my car in I think three days. That was after hours because he was running some one elses place. The repair work consisted of two new rear arches, two outer sills, inner repairs and a couple of seat mounts.I think he charged me about Ł250 at the time.
It was taken to someone else for the prep Ł250 and then brought back to my mates place for paint.I couldnt get everything done in one place because they were so busy.
One mallard green colour change later = happy days for me.All in it cost me about Ł750 painted !!.
I have even worked in a bodyshop for a while and one or two of my mates are painters working for BM or specialists .It boils my piss !!.
At least its home now and you have some one to sort it out. Also not trying to piss on your bonfire but if the previous repair work had been done correctly you would not be in this situation now.
I remember you having the arches seen too and paint work.Obviously they didnt go back far enough to cure the problem or not sealed correctly imo.
Good luck in getting it sorted and drop that fuel out and stick in the puma

Defo agree lol. The cars that dont rust are the ones that hardly ever get used and are kept in heated garages.
Gonna put the standard wheels back on tomorrow, get the battery charged and give the old poorly girl a hoover out inside cause its covered in shite.

Craig I dont wanna fall out with you but I dont know anyone other bs that want money up front before doing the job. How does it take 7 months to repair a sill and an arch which looks ripply to me.
Then he leaves my car outside with no tax on so I had no other way to get it home apart from driving it with no tax risking my license job and risk loosing my car.
Good news though Gaz from Durham said he will do my car soon.Im gonna get the car taxed anfmd take it to him.He said he will start it in 2 weeks and doesnt want a penny till its done and im happy with it.

Not a good outcome Glenn. Really gutted you've been mugged off by this cunt as you come across as such a nice bloke. Hopefully your problems are behind you and this fella that everyone has recommended will come up trumps for you.
