im not to sure about it myself yet tbh picked it up for Ł40 so there if i need it.

i now have the axle out and cleaned up ready for new mount pads to be welded on in with the axle square this time lol
engine is as low as it will go and its 0.5 degree down, im gonna put diff nose 2.5 degrees down so under acceleration gearbox will drop 1 degree and diff will rise around 1 degree so will sit roughly at gearbox and diff 1.5 degrees down so 3 degrees total, i had 14 - 20 degrees before

prop is 16" long and gearbox is 1.3" higher than diff nose so that should just keep me within 3.2 degrees total uj angle for 5500 rpm in 4th gear.

also doing my prop again as can do it with inclinometer now so hopefully will be 100% dead true, im gonna try anyways.

more progress forwards and backwards

i got some new front tyres on 175 80 r13s as front runners,
have ordered 295/65/15 mickey thompson drag radials for the rear
got a new front prop yoke as i noticed splines are twisted, it turns out the prop should of been in alot further it couldnt as the prop yoke was fooked well that now in turn has fooked the gearbox tailshaft spline and twisted it, it was on about 3" and its screwed the spline up so shows the torque its chucking out i guess.
new mainshaft is on its way from america so fingers crossed be up and running again for the end of january all being well, asumming the gearbox still works after ive rebuilt it lol

some pics

and my 295/65/15 mickey thompson street drag radials have arrived

one last check of axle allignment then il make the prop, need some dryish weather to try it then up the track.

well i thought id do a little update, ive not looked at the car for about 10 weeks as im waiting on a ramp but a ramp is now in site a bradbury 4 post wheel free, so i thought id try get back in the spirit of it and started cleaning up the wheels.

considering how bad they were i thought it came up quite well so i did all 4

ive now ordered some custom adaptors so i can fit the front chevy rims aswell.

tyres are now all brand new rears 295/65/15 mickey thompson radials and brand new fronts 195/80/15 uniroyals radials.

once ramp is in i will make the prop and try it out.

i finally blew the dust of this today, started her up started well considering the choke isnt even hooked up yet.
ive just ordered some tin plate to make the tunnel plates with.
i had a brain wave on how to check my steering, i put 2 6 foot long straight edges on each tyre and measured the width at the front of the tyres. then measured 12" forward and it was towing in 1" lol
i dont know what it should be but i set it 2 2.5mm towing in should hopefully be near enough for now.
i have also ordered a timing pointer for it aswell so i can at least measures what im changeing rather than just twist and hope lol
ive got the log book back aswell changed to 5500cc and colour black

i do 6 days a week 9 hours a day at the moment. but i run the workshop and have 3 employees in the workshop aswell atm, so my trainee does a good chunk of my car work here and there between machine repairs.
i do all the technicals building turbos, engine, gearboxs etc but alot of the donkey work i get the boys to do some of it. it works well tbh as we are always repairing tractors, bulldozers etc so have all the equipment anyways.

well all the welding is done. we have made a steel plate belly pan aswell under and behind the drivers seat as protection incase anything flies to bits, also a full steel cage where the prop runs.
the rear springs are new heavy duty 4 leaf capri springs and it was solid, so ive removed the lower 2 springs that should now hopefully let it aquat abit and will also now lower the back end another 1/2", i now have approximately 60mm travel down to the bump stops.
cage is all fully welded with an inner bar aswell and a left side bar all cds tube.
and yesterday morning we fitted the 2 side panels we made for the bonnet just to help fill the front abit, my cousin shaped them hes a dab hand with a hammer and a sheet of aluminium.
ive ordered 2.5 litres of etch primer and 2.5 litres of matt black, rear axle and hanger bolts/brackets are all being painted chrome.
just gotta sand the panels a little for the paint to key then im gonna paint it asap.
and ive got an electronic hurst line loc kit to go on aswell

well loads more done.
we sanded it all down not worrying about finish just to get the paint to key.
i cleaned and painted the axle chrome

gave the chassis a final wash and then masked up and got some heaters under it, and hung all the side panels, belly pan etc from the ramp for painting.

then finally i spent 5 hours today etch primering the chassis and all the panels.

i shall start the matt black painting tommorow around 11 am hopefully.

scoooby slayer;- she drives nice and straight now, i got a carb tuning kit and changed metering springs and rods but still have a slight bog, im gonna try leaning of the main jet next as i think its a rich moment coming onto secondaries.

black_jack -

You may have to ditch the pipes that are on it now, 4 into 1s are bad for a midrange flat spot (whatever you do with the carbs/ jets)

Also the pipes are a "tuned length" and adding the extra length on the headers may have upset this, as well as putting lumps of weld on the inside (in the gas flow)

Ultimately, a pro custom fabricated exhaust, tailored to your requirements, is what you may need, even go up a little in diameter

the pipes have nothing to do with the flat spot, the carb had an air leak underneath it as its a quadra jet manifold and it didnt have the appropriate gasket but that is sorted now, the bog would go lean then mega rich up top where i was richening it up as i was not knowingly tuneing around an air leak below the carb. the diameters are huge aswell no need for any more size on the headers.
also my ignition timing so far is literally by trial and error, but i now have a timing marker ive just got to mark the bottom pulley at tdc then i will set ign timing to 35d max advance as a starting point.

id like some zoomie headers but thats not what this car is about, its about building as much of it as i can myself and haveing some cheap fun with it although i am going to get bailey morris to make me a proper propshaft as there not that expensive and i dont want to risk wrecking my rebuilt gearbox with a wobbly prop as its out about 1.5mm roughly enough so i can see it wobble slightly on the diff end, pretty pissed tbh as i spent ages trying to get it perfect but hey ho.

well shes all now painted and started putting it back together.
engine, box and axle are back in now.

and ive got a timing tab from the states but my pulley had no tbc mark of any sort.
so i rigged up my dial gauge through the plug hole and found exact tdc with 0.5 thou which is about 0.5 degrees accuracy.

Looking really good, what meeting are you going to rwyb at? and what times do you anticipate? I recon it should be good for 11's
the only thing I would change is the alternater position, apart from that it looks the bollox.

i have literally no options on the alternator the chassis is full of engine lol.
i keep looking at either a 383 stroker kit, edelbrock supercharger kit or a twin turbo kit. must resist though i need to get it going and make sure its ok as it is before i add more power lol

im not sure on rwyb yet to early to say.

well i got her running today and put my timing light on.
i had 31d idle 47d flat out
so ive now got it down to 21d idle 37d flat out and it revs much more freely, if i run 20d or less at idle it starts to stumble badly.
il get some more picks up soon as shes coming along nicely

well here some pics of latest progress.
all the wiring is now done just needs the armouring finishing of when it gets here.
also my line lock is done hurst line lock electric operated by switch on gear lever

everything works except amps gauge as i couldnt be arsed to wire it up lol if i can ever be bothered il reroute the alt wire through it.

road angel is my speedo i just hope it gets signal havnt had it out yet to try it.

all the brake pipes are done im just waiting on the clips to mount them and we can then bleed the brakes up.
its also got a wilwod brake bias valve mounted underneath where i can reach it from sitting in the car as it locks up the rears to easy for my likeing lol
once the underneath is finished il get some pics under there it looks quite tidy i have to say for a country job

total cost so far is about Ł2000 and thats with log book 1969 tax exempt already registered as 5500 cc

well weve got some more done now.
ive had bog issues with the car when puching the throttle so i sprayed around the base and adaptor and found i had a vacuum leak so i removed the carb and there was also a leak where the exhaust crossover was blowing into the base of the carb !

so i plugged the ports by taping a thread and making a plug to block them, you can see the plugs in the pic below, the channed inbetween them is called the heat exchanger its supposed to help cold running by heating the carb, anyways on closer inspection i was bolting my square bore eddy carb upto a spreadbore adaptor and my intake is square bore anyways so now ive blocked the heat exchanger ive now bolted the carb down direct to the intake and all faces cleaned and checked with a file for flatness.

and she seems to run real good now so i thought id better start tuneing it again so i bought another aem wideband as i used the dutton one on my r32, so i hooked up the gauge and set the idle at 950 rpm and adjusted the mixtures so it fluctuates from 14.4 to 15.3 idle on both banks now. i also removed my first tail pipes and made some new ones with 3" stainless cossie exhaust tube welded to a plasma cut 6mm plate, i then fitted some 3" decibel killers i ordered from ebay.

i am considering trying to make it road legal now aswell as its may 1970 so tax exempt and log book is in my name already changed over to 5500cc.
so weve fitted a brake switch to the pedal and some 5 3/4" headlights on the top arms central to the wheels.

as soon as its dry im gonna get the massey out with the sweep and clean the road and do some on throttle tuneing up my 1/4 mile track

well im pretty excited this afternoon, as for the first time since i built this engine originaly back in 2001 its always had a bog issue.
anyways for the first time ever ive floored the throttle from idle and it now revs straight to the limiter, no hesitation, no bog just a clean rev

proper well chuffed today
it was dry ish this afternoon so i got the car out for a few runs.
apart from soggy brake pedal, squating so hard the prop is rubbing the hoop and tyres spinning in dust and dirt it feels really good.
i tried the line lock and heated the tyres up then launched and it just squated right down to the bump stops and gone
no more flat spot and fuelling is mid 13s afr in the mid range dropping to mid 12s uptop so pretty good i think, i had about 70 mph which was midway in 3rd, flat out in top gear is 175 mph fpmsl fook that

so gotta bleed brakes again and check for any small leaks and need to slightly alter my rear most prop hoop abit so its about 1" higher.
im happy though its still a handful to drive but were gettingt there

well i got bailey morris to make my propshaft for me.

also got a new corvette pinion flange that fits perfect, raised the prop hoop as its squating so hard and crushing the bump stop and the prop was hitting the top rear of the hoop. im nearly ready for another trial again

Quick Reply: V8 dutton kit car dragster thing lol running again :)
