That looks a right mess mate......pity you're so far away as i've still got the shell of mine that i broke last year, in way way better condition than that with front end resto, turrets for coilovers etc, sat doing nothing and may end up at the scrappy even!

I was worried about that so stripped the kit of to double check. Well worth doing on any RST.

I wouldn't say that was too far gone. Just a shit lot of work!

Bloody hell it is a bit rusty.Any car can be saves if you have the time and money.I would find another shell cause it will properly be easier just to swap the bits over to a new shell.

it can be done yer ! worth it? well maybe not ,but its an original so I would weigh up the cost of a re-body and the resto costs an effort I had a mini almost this bad and did do a resto but a mini has a more simple panel make-up.

Thats about as bad as mine was!

Totally agree with others. get it fixed up, to many people just give in too easy and break them, reshell etc, There wont be many left soon.

looks in a similer state to my S1 when I bought It. In fact mine was prob worse.

In all honesty I would just get a better shell. I wouldn't bother going through all that again if I could turn the clock back. Thats a lot of fabrication work there. BUT if there is no real rush and you have a good idea of what your doing then crack on!

If you are handy with a welder, and no a thing or two about metalwork and fabrication, then it really is a question of time, and yes it could be completed.

However, if this is not the case, then i would consider a reshell, my first turbo was in similar condition to yours, by the time you have dialled in the cost of the replacement panels, welder and gas and all the tools to boot, not to mention countless hours, and paint.
A reshell is a no brainer, i would not advise practicing welding on a project with that level of rust on it..
If you look hard enough you can get a decent shell with no need to paint for reasonable money.

Ah a fellow Wiganer with a rusty Escort. Nothing is to far gone if you want to save it mate.Plenty panels available, just cut the rot out and weld them in. I am 6 months into restoring a Mk2 RS2000 outside thats well worse than your shell. Nip round and have a look it might make yours look not quite as bad as you think.

going to go ahead with the restoration but with it needing all the panels do i mk3 it as i really have a soft spot fot the s1.
would like to know what you lot think to make me make up my mind

Now youve mentioned mk3, have you ever thought about just reshelling it into a gen s1 shell or a mint granny spec shell? S1 parts are Very expensive now days though, interiors, dash boards, body kits, and other wee bits

hi mate if you go ahead with the mk3 let me know as i got some panels for sale, front and rear panels, front crossmember, full sills, bumper corners headlights all new parts, will do you a good deal if you need them all

i fixed 1 last year that was as bad,if not a little worse than that.wasted 7 weeks doing it,you will never make that pretty and if you do it would take forever.
best thing is reshell or sell all the parts and buy a good 1,yeah,it has an rs turbo logbook and chassis number,but how many folk who have said save it would be willing to pay the same as what a good 1 costs if you were to sell it when its finished,nobody would and it will cost far more.
as for making a s1 rep,it will be easier and cheaper buying 1 and it will last longer too.save yourself the heartache and weigh it in,im talking from experience as i got mine mot'd then broke it!






i welded nearly every panel on it,even the roof needed welding,i scrapped it after doing 300 miles as the turbo went,it needed an alarm and id spent enough and was sixk of it.
its your car,do what you like but at the end of the day id rather have the best shell in the shortest amount of time over a bit of paper which says rs on it!
