Looks like it may be complete soon

My car had aeroquip from day 1 so this would never happen because of a pipe failure but wastegate diaphrams do too fail so why not set the wastegate up so if everthing else fails then it only ever gets max boost regardless?
#562
that is a very good point and would stop it happening again

Went the day well . Took the head off a no damage to the head or the Block not a scratch, however Mark sent the head off for a light skim to be sure its flat. The only damage besides a dead gasket is a bowed Water tank it looks rather cool not being flat so will probably leave alone.
The old Autronic boost solenoid similar to the one used by Noah to get some speed out of his ark will be replaced by a newer style about 1/5th of the size. Will sort the aero quip stuff out on Wednesday as well as clean the engine bay. Dentist tomorrow so no play untill Wednesday.

Sorry to hear about this guys . Can Autronic not run a boost cut like T6 can? Surely that would be better than dumping a load of fuel in or just allowing it to happen?
Also, as Martin says, set the wastegate spring up so that even in if the wastegate diaphragm fails (something that seems to be a regular feature of external wastegates), the max spring pressure is the same as the max top line boost? This is how mine is set as well so even if I disconnect the air injectors, I can only see a max of 2.2bar on the top line.
That way you have two fail-safe scenarios to absolutely limit this from happening again .
Glad to hear it will be a simple and quick fix - lesson learned and the car gets to live another day !

In hindsight this was not a good idea but again its not a good idea to keep hitting a limiter with such a highly strung engine,
The next run will be a little bit more conservative with what and how we are running it.

Fucking hell rod sounds like you have as much luck as me lately!!
I must admit when i heard what happend the other day i said that will need a strip down then but just read your above post and well pleased for you if youve got away with just a new h/g needed..
Hope its up and running quickly again..
cheers danny

Rod, take a picture of the gasket square onto it so you can show how egg shaped it went, its fucking mental that, Ive never seen a gasket which has yielded quite like that, the cylinder pressures involved must have been fucking immense!
Testament to the rest of the engine that its all still in one piece TBH

Details of the car are on PistonHeads but its circa 900bhp. More to come in better conditions as I understand it.
Impressive gasket failure BTW Rod, look forward to the 2nd attempt

Started talking to Mark about the mods to the car after its topspeed runs are over. Looks like the latest BW & power down to 730/750 is the starting point. Mine is a step too far & too laggy for a road car. This is my first conversion thats built for Topspeed & im sure its going to run silly speeds but its too hairy for use on the road. My new targets are 208 off Nitrous & a more conservative 212 on the gas. Will leave the far side of 215 to the next generation trying to make 1000bhp YB run for 30secs down Brunters best of luck .

Just needs a piano hinge along the back of the head and a clasp on the front, and a cambelt with a zip in it and he can change the next one in 2 mins or less

So on your logic then Rod, you lost big time by not even posting a time while all the slow old supercars ran up and down all day long... (joke btw)

dont think i'll ever meet another 65 year old preparing to 'de tune' his car to 750bhp!!!

After the Ł52k engine thread I started searching for rally cross engine info and found this.
Admitedly its off the Pikes Peak Fiesta Gronholm drove, but look at this for an over boost safety feature!

From the link:
"Additional safety is provided by this pressure relief valve on the intake manifold."
Wasn't really that hard to explain, so ye it's just a high poundage dump valve straight off the inlet plenum it only goes off if a damaging about of boost is created.

The only thing that controls the relief valve is the poundage of the springs, if the boost pressure gets too high, it leaks, will poentially kill the turbo by overspeeding it but will hopefully save the engine itself.
