Subaru Impreza STI powered 1981 XR3. The shell is here. WOW!!!
Bored at work so thought I'd get a new thread going. With Jon not having much interest in his shell and me not wanting a very tidy shell seen scrapped I've desided to take it on. Should be arriving Wednesday 18TH.
Heres what it looked like when Kieth had it.
And now.
Cant wait to get stuck in!
Sorting out all my old kit tomorrow up the barn as I think I have 90% of the gear to MFI turbo it (for now )
Got a Series 1 MFI engine, kent cvh34 cam, ported head.
Metering head
40mm springs
standard intercooler
standard ecu etc etc
so plan for now is to build it back up as a tidy standard turbo power runaround so I can sell the Scooby then when the Series 2 is back on the raod look into RWD

Cheers guys. Well I've made a space in the Barn, layed the carpet on the floor and ready for it to arrive. Looking at the MFI stuff today made me realise how trouble some it could be as a daily driver so thinking 2.0 Zetec for now.

Yeah was never really going to scrap it I just needed it gone. So many people put their name to it and let me down I had to make a drastic statement about its future to get someone to react. Thankfully it was Muz who put his name to it and I know he'll do it justice. He's put carpet down in the barn, what more can I say. Do it right pal

The plan for this car was always to convert it to RWD or 4WD at some point so I've been looking into it. Out with the tape meausre and heres what I've found so far;
Mark 3 Escort Dimentions
Sapphire Cosworth Dimentions
But heres where it gets interesting
Subaru Impreza Classic dimentions
and even more interesting is we have a 1995 Subaru Impreza STI in the barn doing nothing. Rather tempting.
Heres some more figures I've noticed;
Wheel Base
MK3 Escort__________Sapphire Cosworth___________Subaru Impreza
_2400mm _______________2608mm___________________2520mm
_______________________+208mm__________________ +120mm
Front Track
MK3 Escort __________Sapphire Cosworth__________Subaru Impreza
_1422mm _______________1452mm___________________1460mm
________________________+30mm ___________________+38mm
Rear Track
MK3 Escort___________Sapphire Cosworth__________Subaru Impreza
_1440mm________________1468mm__________________145 0mm
________________________+28mm___________________+1 0mm
The Subaru stuff actually looks a better size to start with. Its a pretty straight forward looking floor pan also. I've yet to measure the strut hight etc to make sure I won't have the front stuts coming through the bonnet level but so far it's looking promising.
I also havent measured the dimentions of the engine as its quite a big old brute but id it fits in the boot of a MK1 Fiesta it should be fine.

Your right they do look bloody awful. However you can't deny they are a very good engine if tuned properly. All alloy, fully forged and blueprinted as standard. Plus I have an STI here to use. Will work out a fair bit cheaper to build without the Cosworth tax also

chop shop did a mk2 golf with scooby running gear can't see any reason why it can not be done to a mk3 as long as you have a welder anything is possible

Never! The Series 2 is still my main love. Just it's close to completion now and I'll need something else to keep me busy. Just looking into the cost of parts etc the Subaru does make good sense. Especially if it will fit as well as it looks it could. Plus the engine I have here in the "spare" wagon looks to be a very high spec enigne. We know its an early import STI lump, so its all forged, but it's also got a 5th injector, so it's putting out enough power to warrent one and obviously been looked after.

Well I've taken some more rough meausrements. Good news is the Subaru engine bay will pysically fit in the Escorts
Escort 1300mm wideinner wing to inner wing 770mm long bulkhead the front panel
Subaru 1340mm wide inner wing to inner wing 880 mm long bulkhead to front panel.
The Subaru however does have quite a large gap between the block/ cambelt cover to the ratiator so I can close this up to gain some of the 110mm length the Escort doesn't give me.
I also hate the look of the flat four, but my brothers don't look too bad
I'll take soem better measures Wednesday when I'm not still half pissed.

Nothing wrong with it Jon. Brother bought it cheap of a customer of his who was 21 who needed money quick as he was being made redundant and paying £2500 a year to insure it!

Not the best of days to start with. Went up to the yard to find my mint, 4 owner from new, 40k mile Fiesta shell which I have just sold looking like this.
Well the day has come and the the shell is here. Whats can I say......WOW!
Floor pans are very very good. Just a little surface rust. Only been welded once on the rear of the nearside pan.
Chassis rails have never been welded
Front chassis rails are mint.
Back of the front panel just surface rust
Origional inner wings
Battery tray has surfce rust on top but underneith looks ok really. Will be replaced though.
Sunroof is mint
Boot floors never been welded either
Boot hinges
And fuel filler cap
Dash isn't the worst I've seen either
Shes a good 'un 8)

It is a shame to cut the floor out but start with a good shell in the first place and you wont have problems later on elsewhere Just loving looking at it now. Wish I could get it in my living room

They are bloody awful looking things arent they? However noone can deny how well they perform, massive tuning scope and lets not forget how well scoobys get off the line . I know it would be nicer to go down the Cosworth route, but, it's been done to death and also a ropey doner Sapphire which hasn't got a fucked engine will be the best part of £4k before we start, whereas this Scooby has not a spot of rust, 300BHP with the proper mods done and I can have it for £700. No brainer really.
