Cool MK1 GOLF DRIVER (something a lil different from the mk4 escorts)

Just want to say a big hello to everyone, aint been on here in ages since i had my mk4 escorts which im known for..

anyway i wanted something different so, i bought this a few weeks ago..

really am buzzing still that ive got a mk1 golf, ive always wanted one since i was a little'en, got back a few hours ago after about a 6 hour around trip to collect it..

1983 mk1 3 door
mars red
1.3 driver
4months tax
10months mot

just had a full service, new brakes all round, oil and filter change, air filter, looks like a new cambelt and waterpump (by previous owner)

on the 130mile drive home it never missed a beat

havnt cleaned/polished it yet, a mate of mine is mopping it as it has a few swirl marks which i want rid of but what 26 year car hasnt to be honest..

have to say the pictures do it some justice, it is a little rough around the edges, quite a few stone chips, front panel has quite abit of surface rust (not rotten), mark below the rear boot lock, and scratchs down the top of the drivers wing where it meets the bonnet at the front..

apart from the above its sound, sills are very clean, so are inner arches, boot floor and scuttle panel..

the first mod arrived:

can you spot it..

hawaiian 'lei' from my rear view mirror..

and another pic for good measure..

and then these came a few days ago..

Borbet t's 7j front/8j rear

the toyos on the 8js are scrap, but i had the 195/45/14 rainsports put on the rear, and i bought some goodyear 175/50/14s on the front

had 5mins spare so thought it would be rude not to give the wheels a trial fit..

this how they looked..

and the new dustys.. (suite the car so well, as my lil sister calls it the lego car) LOL!

i have always been abit unsure if i want to find out whats underneath the gti arches, but today i bit the bullet and took one off to find...

this was after i gave them a little wipe over but still very solid

just thought i would add this lil pic my mate took the other day

it had black trim on top of the doors which was abit tatty (can just make out the black trim in this pic)

anyway i took that off and it was well grubby underneath, mixture of dirt/glue..

with alot of elbow grease, and sore fingers the outcome was worth it..

took it down to have the middle box chopped out as it hung very low, also when they welded the straight through pipe in the twisted it all around so it sits alot higher without smaller exhaust rubbers..

plan to have a few more changes to the exhaust aswell soon..

and also did this..

before:

after:

replaced all the exhaust rubbers as they wer long overdue.

old & new

few changes to the interior, few more to come..

new chrome handles, and winders..

before:

after:

fitted the wheels, just hopefully the coilovers will be here soon..

'reppin' the standard ride hight!

bought me some new parcel shelf straps as it didnt have any when i bought the car..

new polished rocker cover nut and bolt kit for when i get the rocker cover and engine bits shot blasted and powder coated..

and finally after the 3 week wait (supposed to be 4 days), the coilovers finally came..

got my new topmounts (as there was no point fitting the new coilovers with nakerd old ones, as the bearings had loads of play)

and i got up to this..

got to my mates garage at around 6pm and cracked on with a few things, pictures do the talking..

fitting the coilovers..

then put it on the four poster to do the tracking..

we was there from 6-11pm as we did a few more things..

painted the driver badge on the rear as it was faded..

rear tyres wer soooo close to the arch so we knocked up the rear arch lip where it was catching, and trimmed the plastic arch to suite, got quite abit more clearance from it and looks neat..

also fitted the other 'new' exhaust rubber in the middle, turned 2 exhaust clamps round, and chopped off part of an exhaust hanger, all in aid to get more clearance underneath..

THE END RESULT...

while i was out last night i thought i would get a few decent shots of the golf as i havnt as yet, and just gave them a quick edit on photoshop (first time ive tried editing to be honest)

let me know what you think

and the front panel has only got surface rust but its on the 'to do' list aswell as many more things so will 100% get sorted at some stage..

This is looking good. Has the potential to be a proper boss little car mate. I take it you'll want stretched tyres at some point? Seems the thing to do on these, lol.

respect where its due, thats an awesome little motor, fair play

and even bigger respect for lowering it properly on coilovers instead of the epic coil chopping on your old bonus's

Seen your post on E38, looks mint to be fair!

What did you pay for it out of interest? Id like something like this as a daily! But MK1's seem to have gone up in price lately.

Very nice, keeping the GTi arches? Rare to see them nowadays on mk1s, everyone seems to remove them, I love them.

was planning on taking it off the road in a few weeks when the tax is up (over the winter months), but it wouldnt start just, down to the starter motor, so this has gave me the urge to just take it off the road now for the winter instead..

will still update, as i will be making changes to the car still..

update time..

first off just want to say sorry for the riffy car, longest time i have left it without a rinse, anyway..

put plate on sun visor and undersealed front panel (for now untill i get a new lower front panel welded in)

new tip welded on (up and out)

fitted camber shims (1.5 degrees on top of what it was already from lowering it, my guess is around 2 degrees now, but if someone would like to roughly say that would be great )

took the helper springs out the rear and gone down another 25mm (so thats around -145mm from standard) and lowerd the front down another 20mm (did lower it all the way down but run into big problems, chassic was sitting on the driveshafts and the wheel was sitting on the coilover adjusters, so had to wind it up for now (untill i get the chassic notched etc, do plan to go quite abit lower if i can)

got around 2mm clearance on the rear arch to tyre, so some 175/50/14 tyres are on the list..

bought me these 5mm spacers (i know there not the best) but going to try them out first, will get some 10/15mm hubcentric ones soon)

its off the road now for the winter and here is the 'to do' list..

fix slight gearbox leak
chassic notched
paint drums and calipers (black)
underseal and paint inner arches
get a few bits underneath cleaned and painted
new front panel
degrease engine bay and get a few more bits painted
paint manifold matt black and block
fit spacers (will be 10/15mm hubcentrics)
new starter motor
175/50/14 tyres for the rear

and also lower it down some more

will keep everyone updated when i make more progress

That is as cool as fuck mate.

I bought a Mk1 GTi when I first arrived in NZ(off an Englishman of course), I was at a petrol station one night and a guy asked me if it was a Toyota Starlet...... I nearly punched the bastard. When I explained it was a Mk1 GTi he just had no idea what it was.

I used to get stopped by people who had owned them too, and they were always British. Seems everyone has had a MK1 Golf.

Ended up selling it and regretted it ever since, was rock solid reliable and pretty cool to drive about in.

Pics:

2 days after I got it:

not really an update, quite boring, but had a little spare time earlier so

removed the startermotor today, just got to source a new one now..

also moved it into its new place on the drive where it will stay till the new year, and also added a new sticker for the rear, not sure what to think of it but end of the day its only a sticker..

hopefully get 5mins spare in the next few days to get some products so then i can crack on and do a few jobs..

Looks wicked mate

Really miss my old one (hope you dont mind me posting a pic)

Think you need to get a splitter though.

I have most of the parts for a rear disk conversion and a set of 5 standard wheels for winter if your interested.

dont mind at all gav (you posting a pic) looks very nice, wheels are different to the norm

soon as i get a new lower front panel im getting a splitter for the front, but the cl/lx splitter, like the gti duck bill but smaller..

if it had more power under the bonnet etc then i would be interested in the rear disc conversion but the 1.3 is staying, also i still have my standard steels i had on the car when i bought it (which are going on soon, when the wheels are sent off to be refurbed) but thanks for the offer matey

just spotted your in the westmidlands, same here...

Mine was the 1.8GTi

Loved the car just needed something bigger as a daily so sold it for the Mk4, what a mistake, they are soo boring in comparison to the Mk1
Wish i had kept it now.
Wheels were 8x15 Compomotive ML's.
Will get another Mk1 someday but will be a non sunroof like yours.
