Anyway sorry for lack of updates, there really has not been much to photograph or write home about.

Here are a few shots of what ive been up to the last few weeks. Doesnt look like much but believe me, anyone who has done this will know what a crap, never ending task it is.

Ive always sandblasted shells in the past, but due to trying to keep costs down and not damage the "top side" im doing it the hard way for a change.

Ummmm bare naked metal, getting there slowly.

horrible job!

Heat gun, scraper, grinding wheel and lots of sand paper.

As its bare metal its best to use an etch/acid primer, then a high build primer. before going on to base coat then clear laquer.

If you can afford it get it sandblasted, soooo much easier believe me!!

hi Lee
glad to see you back, bloody hell that floor is coming along a peach fair play to you some hard graft gone in there looks great.
the diff sticker i got made local a few yeras ago a replica of the original, the other markings you can see on the rear arms etc i painted on after taking pics when i took the arms off with the original markings on them, i then got stickers made like a template sprayed the markings on and removed the template sticker. hope this helps.
ive only got one or two more pics and not really of the underside just an exterior shot and 1 or 2 engine bay shots.
keep up the good work Lee as i think this is going to be awsome judging by the work done so far , the owner is 1 lucky dude

cheers

Cracking story is no comfort for the Ł5000 ive spent on her!
Asking Ł2k is painful enough, and people still make offers I just cant believe no ones even been to look at the car! 1st person to see willl buy it. Believe me if this 3 door wasnt here the 16i would be in 200 bits buy now all on ebay

I think the problem is everyone sold up in the summer (recession and all that) So not only narrowed the prices between projects and minters but also everyone who thought about owning one went and bought the ones for sale. supply and demand I suppose.

Anyway Ive got some strange news. All will be revealed in my 16i resto shortly soon....I dont think youl believe it, I cant

Front inner wing

part of the rear inner wing

rear seat area

Sorry the photos dont really do it justice, due to the flash and poor light.
I think im going crazy, have spent over about 30 hours so far underneath this car looking at the same bit of metal getting covered in shit
Its very close not tho, bit more going over it all again to get to bare metal and a quick welding session on those dodgy bits pointed out earlier in the resto, then we are ready for paint

As if this isnt enough excitment................take a look at this

Im not going to show you it all yet as it will spoil the end article and more importantly I want it to remain all covered up and safe untill its needed.

I am over the moon with the powdercoating. They are not the cheapest guys but christ if ive learnt anything, you get what you pay for.

The stuff has all been through and had 2 coats of powder and baked at exactly the correct temp and time. I mean they even went to the trouble to bubble wrap each part individually. Customer service is amazing

Rear beam

front anti roll bar

Brake disks, they even masked the friction areas with precision

part of the front hub

rear anti roll bar

Thats enough for now, cant wait to unwrap it all and fit it

Getting closer still to spraying, all masked up

(ps anyone want an escort )

you have got an incredible speed in restoring a car!! very good job
looks really good and little rust at all for a 23year old car .

So i heard a story of the escort mk3 1st production serie (1982). There where 500 cars build totally different treadment from all the others in the colours light green and brown. This cars have very little rust nowadays but because this process was a 100 Deutsche mark more expensive they cancelled it.

Found one on the scrapyeard nearby, looks like it came straight out of the garage at all these years. BUt it was damaged

Yeh its ok, my gun fucked up half way round, and I got a few runs on the spare wheel well, before finally having to resort to changing to my HLVP/gravity which shoots paint like a dream. Its just painting up side down with a gravity fed gun is as difficult as it sounds. Not the end of the owrld just take 2 mins to sand it, as im going over the whole thing to flat it back with about 1200 grade.

Yes, were not going for 100% original (tho this is my prefered choice)

It will be moonstone instead of the original dove grey.

Got a few choice engine bay mods, which im looking foward to doing as ive not seen it done before. I have a vision of how it will look I just hope Im on the same wave length as the owner.

As said its always too easy/temption to put my own presonal touch in (O.E standard for me!) but im really enjoying imagining how its going to look.

Cant wait to get the moonstone and clear coats on, and unwrap those powder coated goodies

flatting it with 1200 god if it was mine it would get a quick flat witha bit of 600 then flick some colour on it lol fair play to you,

If it was mine I would weld up all the holes in the inner wings like I did on mine if that makes any sense imho it looks so much tidier

Very high quality of work. I wish I had the cash for the 1600i and for that matter, the space! Its a beauty and to look at, its funny but the 1600i is my fave RS.

To be honest i'm amazed at your skill and speed! I'm learning about cars for the first time and the restoration part of it is taking its sweet time as far as i'm concerned. You are certainly right about it being solid, very little rust for the age. I guess people just see cossies as imune from it! Its hard to put Cosworth and Rust in the same sentence!

yeh does look a bit like a machine gun has been put to the inner wings, but most of them holes do actually have selftappers in when all the brackets are back on the car.

Not got too many pics as the light is shit now, and the flash distorts things.

moonstone

1st of three base coats

clear coats, sorry about the flash!

Now the fun finally starts

yeh its 2k. It will need a quick buff up tommrow, as you can see on the slam pannel close up there is a small amount of over spray dust on there. The flash makes it look worse, I must get a better camera.

2K is lovley stuff to work with especially a pearl/metalic like moonstone. Im loving my air fed mask, taken about a year to get used to, as your vision is massivley reduced compared to the old celly where your only using a charcoal resporator.

I was hoping to have the car back on its wheels buy now, but work is crazy and I bought my wife an audi TT last week, only for the slave and mastercylinder to go and a slippery clutch. And its engie and gear box out on this due top the 4 wheel drive and major lack of space Still done now tho. Loving the car, its 3 times better then my escort cossie better in the corners and quicker
