well got my new engine. it didnt last long tho lol. its an ex cup car engine blueprinted by a company called Aldon like 20 years ago.
the engines only done one seasons racing so looks pretty much new inside
started stripping it down and plan on putting a nice cam and some fresh valve gear in it (y)
engine looks like this now.

gaskets arrived, shells arrived but then decided i should get the bore honed and order some new rings (as if your going to do it, do it properly)
so scrapping the plan to just bolt it back together after a minor cosmetic restoration decided to tackle the pistons that appear to have suffered serious oil surge and pickup lol
the piston has been rubbing hard against the bore
as you can see, each piston had a bad scoring on the sides, so using an array of papers and polishes set about cleaning them up
then began to clean the tops up, they are all down to a perfect 600grit finish and look really good. sadly though they have been very badly pitted from some pre ignition in the past

progress is pretty slow as im just waiting on some bits to arrive, but the cars insured on the 25th so should be all done pretty soon.
:L while waiting for the guy at the counter at the local DMA who are having a clear out i spotted a rev counter they were chucking out. they had it for 20 years apparently, nobody bought it, coil driven and exactly what i have been looking for. he said i could have it for free :')
i think it looks really good, and isnt one of those daft modern massive white ones you always find

the engine is now built for the second time lol
but i forgot to take many pictures. did get a few though
after putting the new rings on the pistons, found the ring compressor and put the rods and pistons in. the bore was very tight too which is a bonus. the ring gap was perfect.
then went on to put the new shells and cam + followers in.
then could put the crank in!
however at which point my phone ran out of battery. so will go and get a few more in an hour or two

managed to get an hour on the engine today
so got some work done :L
BUT forgot to take lots of pictures.
so just, put the case and head gasket on
then put the head on.
however, noticed that the pushrods were at the same height as can be seen here. one or two were right
so when i put the rocker gear on, what do you do to make the valves open for the first time?
i cannot remember ever having a problem with this before but its been like a year since i last built an xflow and cant remember what i did :/

minor update, the cars all good, front wheel bearing went the other day but new ones 3 quid so not a problem lol
1100 pulls better than i thought it would but the car on the whole is hopeless in the snow and ice :/
the 1.6 has been build, but its almsot impossible to turn over :/ so gunna have to strip is down and find out whats up.
the pistons are hard to move in the bores with new rings anyway, then when u tighten the crank down it almost goes solid :/ + timing gear and compression its silly so somethings wrong
