E1.6 RST™ - A 300+bhp, 160+mph 1600 CVH - Now Breaking Page 62 Update 29/01
When my engine blew up in August 2003, it has sat on my driveway since October and hasn't done alot. I have been deciding what way I should go with things. I have thought about selling it on as it was, getting it running and selling it on or doing it up properly.
This is how it used to look. I have to remind myself sometimes...
With a bit of help from my friends and alot of encouragement, plus nagging from the parents about getting shot of it, I have decided to go all bufty and try my hand at concours. Seems only right really as it is the only thing I haven't tried in my RST yet. This is how it has sat since October, not even sheeted up.
Damo V came over Monday night, and after I got my haircut we took it to his Dad's garage so he can begin welding and painting. I had already stripped most of the car and didn't think there was much left to take out, until I got my digicam back...
Now, I knew it had a bit of rust here and there;
Mainly here...
...Here...
...Here...
...And some in here...
In a few short days, Damo and his Dad, but mainly Damo have cracked on well and truely. I was very surprised at how much they had done.
After the battery tray was removed, this was the hole...
Fusebox didn't escape the rot either...
Things start looking better...
BATTERY TRAY
New one ready to be welded in
FRONT PANEL
FRONT CROSSMEMBER
STRUT THINGY
A little bit more work is needed on the Engine Bay before it can be painted, there are a few cracks to seal up and some holes to be welded. Then it is on to the inner Bulkhead and Floor Plan, then on the the arches, and thats pretty much it before it is totally resprayed and ready to have the engine fitted.
The arches aren't too sad which I am pleased about, and the sills are fine. Cracks in the Floor Pan look like they were caused by some pleb jacking the car up in the wrong place. There is a dent on the Boot Floor which seems to have been caused by a bit of conrod or block (thank you Vulcan)!
More pics to come later in the week.

I've been a busy bunny
Everything SO FAR is the work of my own fair hands... apart from the fabrication going on in the battery tray area... I cant lay claim to that
Been even busier today .... mainly eating macd's .. pretty much finished all the welding on the front end now...
Tony, there are LOADS more pics than that.... get em up.... you pansie ....
Overall, I am VERY imoressed with the cleanliness og=f the shell, very good in the most part... compared to some!!

Ive done a couple of my own cars before, One even more in depth than this, sprayed everywhere, underneath, the lot.
I recently did an exterior refurb of an MG Roadster. But no, its not something I usually do Im afraid... because of that, I also generally, by my own admission work out quite expensive...... I only did the MG cos I was asked and asked and asked.... same with Tony's pmsl... see the thing is, I use all my dads tools and equipment, plus his workshop space ...... God I wish I had a lovely big garage at the bottom of my garden

Nice one Tony!! Good to see some real progress!!
I bet there isn't a single S2 around (aside from those that have been done already) that have escaped the rot above the pedal box. It seems to be classic.
Anyway, nice one Damo, looks like a top job!! It's good to see you with some focus Tony!!

I love that 1st picture, one of my all time fav pictures of white RST's (and good back drop too )
Its going well Damo, as you say the shell is in very good condition and not too many big patches to repair. Kepp up the good work
TT, its gonna be good

Thanks everyone for your comments. I was a bit worried about posting it up here incase everyone called it a shed (which it was) PMSL. But the threat of Damo downing tools made me feel like I should throw a few pics up.
It only took me and hour to re size them all and upload them all, then I was told by Steve you could re size them in batches... whoooops.
Damo, maybe your tallents of mobile repairs are wasted, maybe you should get into errrr.... non- mobile repairs? PMSL. I know there are more pics, but I want to show how it was, and how it was fixed all on one post so people can see, thus I am saving them. You'll see
Thanx alot guys

TBH the small patches that you see in the pics are just that, small patches. the worst of it IMO was the battery tray.

Yeah but tone, you gotta put the opics up of the areas which dont have any grot but usually do!! ie the inner flitch panels!!
Lewis... yup the Estate underwent very much similer treatment... when I come up, I'll bring my photo albums
Adam, this is NOWHERE near as bad as yours mate!!! honestly... its very very clean.
All original wings and front panel!!!... thats why Im repairing them, as opposed to just wacking a new front panel on, the spot welds on the wings to front panel are proper clean, up top and more importantly below also!!
I'll take some pics from below, before I paint em..
