Wow, that's an amazing amount of work! Wish I could weld (just weld, not even at that standard )
Will you be creating some kind of a schielding for the engine bay and front suspension or will it remain as open as it is now?

If i ever do one, i know who i will be TRYING to copy.. :P
Can't wait to see it done.
For when do you plan to finish?

Hope so as its going on the road ... as its a modified car, and not a car using donar parts it dosnt have to gio through an SVA test as it would be impossible to pass, things like the roof gutters and windscreen wipers (not modded in any way) wouldnt pass due to sharp edges ... even the leading edge of the wing round the headlamp would fail ...so normal MOT
Ian, thats a great compliment .. thanks
Its going on the road, hence the tube front, if it was racing it would have a monocoque front not spaceframe as spaceframes have been outlawed in most circuit championships, think its only the Northern Saloons Championship that can run spaceframes. As for power, I wouldnt want to see no more than 350 max as after this the escorts seem to run slower, without traction control or the loss of power to a 4wd system the cars spin the wheels up, as the power delivery is a bit fierce .. As the driver learns the car this can be raised .. but to start with I think the owner will just be on stage 1 .. but with a chassis that can cope with that power ..it will be quick.
It will still smoke the tyres .. set the rear to squat and it will smoke em.. set it with some antisquat and it will lunch the clutch ..

Still plodding away with this one, the cage is now finished with the gussets and door bars, the Mk1's i do cant have the normal 'B' pillar gussets as the main hoop is too far behind the pillar, so they get a little shaped box to tie the cage in.
They are shaped so the seat backs fit into them.
The front 'A' pillars are like the normal gussets you see on the Mk2's
Included are a couple of pictures taken from the drivers seat showing the view isnt obstructed by the cage, some cages thicken the 'A' pillar and cut down the viewable area, I dont like this so I place the cage in line with the drivers eye and the 'A' Pillar.
The door bars are fitted to the old MSA rules, whick state that they cant be higher than 1/3rd of the door opening, On Mk1 and 2's te doors are quite small compared to later cars, and with the new half door height rules it makes the opening very small and hard to get in, and as this is a road going car, the lower height suits its job better.
The front Spaceframe is now finished, with the inclusion or the wing stays and drip rail mounts. I made a slam panel up to stop the front panel from flexing and also used the front lower mounts for a towing eye mount. As seen in the 3rd picture.
The steering wheel mount can be seen here, the steering column rund through 2 spherical self aligning bearings, then 2 UJ's , this means the column has a collaspable dogleg in making it safer in front crash, the steering is placed where the owner feels comfortable, I get them to sit in the car and make 'brum brum ' sounds while they turn the wheel, its then tacked into position for them to try again, when they are happy, its fully welded, you'll note that its a long way back, its how i fit the cars, the driver is as far back as possible, and everything is bought to them.
The rear panel had the normal Mk1 Escort problem ... rot.. They always rot out where the chassis legs join into it , the rear of the legs are also normally rotten, I've cut the lower edge away and rolled the panels new edge, this is normally done just inside the chassis legs to remove the large airbrake effect of the panel. The chassis legs where then trimmed away to form a slope, and inside one of these is a tube with a nut welded in to take the rear towing eye. The other leg has a blanking cap.
Its nearly finished now, a few small jobs left, the fiddly ones. and then its back to the owner for the hard and expensive job, filling the shell with all the goodies and paint
