Project Money Pit... Escort track car, Check out the front end! 26/06/2009
Project Money Pit... nothing special, to show car, to track car
This has been my project for a good few years now... and its gone through various stages
not much of a looker to begin with...
but i was struggling to find a non rotten mk5 3 door non XR/RS
so i did a few subtle mods to it
then i had a few mechanical problems and nearly gave it away... but instead went all out on the body work, did a 130 spec upgrade with various other mods... nothing insane though

Then i decided to convert the car to run an MFi ERST setup in the hope of some decent power so i bought this lot:
including a 3 Door cosworth T3 due to the rst one with the engine having notable shaft play
and some better pics of my mo's
I managed to get a fifth MO the same offset and fitment thanks to Colin Smith (Legend)
so i had them refurbed and some nice new proxys fitted
they were dipped, blasted, powder coated black, then sprayed silver and matt laquered
bling!

pants picture, but the whole underside undersealed
Some pictures of it the day it got mot'd (zetec still in place here)
~Then with 12 months mot... the car was disabled
RS2000 discs / calipers versus ST170 discs
then the RS turbo conversion began - took a whole day to get it all mounted and some of the plumbing done
mess of a wiring loom
mmm turbo

massive S2 RST Autospecialists Airtec cooler
not much has happened over summer 2007, well apart from the fact it had an rst engine installed and then removed! i had a mk6 2.0 for a project.
didn't think the rst lump with the boost wound up would survive my track style... (nutter). Car is looking a bit sorry for itself.
i have various jobs to do over winter, get the alloy my girlfriend kerbed refurbed
send the rear coilovers to avo to have them re-sealed... finish the interior, take up the tar etc and paint the floor consider removing the dash, get a roll cage fitted and sort myself an engine.
heres how its looking now,

Right almost upto date, i bought an RS2000 to donate its engine so i can get the car out on track and enjoy it, seemed the best compromise between power and reliability
I'm going to hopefully get the car road worthy over the next month
i've also bought a single wiper linkage.
Latest Purchases:
16point Sparco bolt in roll cage (will be gusseted and welded in) has pick up points for the front and rear suspension
it weighs 30kgs, which is uber light considering the amount of tubing
Ł150 16" 57 plate fiesta alloys with brand new pirelli p zero neros - still considering track tyres, but they are big money.

dropped the RS off today next to money pit... having the roll cage delivered sunday, avo rang to say my rear dampers have had new rods, gas bags, seals o rings and oil and a repaint... for the bargin price of Ł67.93 including return postage.
I'm also after some 180-160 lb rear springs of around 10-12" but i'm sure burtonpower or similar will sort me out
I'm hoping to start the conversion the week after next, however it looks like i've fractured my wrist so may well be in need of help.

this turned up for me today...
i'm really happy with the job they've done, for some reason they sent me the bases and the rods they'd replaced... i should have taken a picture of them when they left, i'm definately going to send the front ones off too although they just need tidying.
looking at Ł20 odd per spring to change my rates. i might leave the front ones alone and just fit softer longer ones to the rear.
Also my cage turned up on sunday and its a monster, will get some pictures next week when i've offered it up to the car.

thanks fella, some people find it a bit marmite... but i did my best to make a mk4 escort / mk3 fez RS kit for the mk5 i also wanted the car to be different without looking shite as most cars with bodykits do
if i could go back in time i'd never have spent a penny on the bodywork, but back then i couldn't afford insurance on a decent engine

the ones with the base plates that have two holes on the base and two holes on the side mount around where your feet would be in the front against the sill with two pipes trianglating onto the front struts
sorry just realised all the pics hadn't loaded up

then i'd have my car doing nothing with no engine... it won't be a trailer queen either (as i haven't got a car to pull a trailer)
i did consider taking the brakes and coilovers off my green one for the RS but tbh i imagine the rs will be pretty grotty under the carpets and then it'd bea waste of an expensive cage!

right basically, got down to the farm to start work to discover that mice had nested in my green car and were buys harvesting the RS of all its insulation... its only been there a week they'd also climbed under the car cover on the green on and were eating it from the inside out... bastards
so aftwer ripping all the insulation out and having a stern word with the mice (explaining that tomorrow i'll have the steam cleaner out) most of them left, not after chewing the labels off my harnesses and having a good munch on the sick on numberplate in the car, thankfully they hadn't eaten the brand new bucket seats or any of my sparce interior trim...
so after arsing around the RS fired up http://youtube.com/watch?v=Cj0alTJEKrA
then i stripped and labelled all the engine electrical plugs as i'm not overly familiar with the I4 engine / management, founda mysterious valve on the o/s strut top that i named dave... stripped the cooling system, iscv and airbox assembly, just have to remove the gear linkage and fuel lines and the subframe can be dropped then i can painstakingly remove the wiring loom from the RS2000, chop the loom out of the green car and set about installing the complete RS loom in money pit :O massive task but hopefully i'm up to it

Top work mate, just read this from start to finish.... There's A lot of respect to be had for people who do all the work themselves in their sheds/garages. It seems that anyone these days can throw blank cheques at an engine builder/tuner and say get on with it. Hats off to you mate
