Default mk1 restoration needing guidance

I brought myself a mk1 escort 3 months ago a right heap really but solid in all the right places. Me and my dad have been working our nicknancks off on it and the shell is coming along sweet. now that im certain wel see this project through to the end iv been thinking about how im gonna get the car to run like a fresh vehicle. Iv got a 1600 xflow ready to be stripped and rebuilt and am thinking of using a sierra 5 speed box. Id like to ask anyone out there a few questions that im worried about etc:

-I want to know what mods i can make to the xflow and how well it can be reconditioned.

-I want to know which sierra gearbox, bellhousing, clutch etc to use.

-I also have an unknown rear axle that i suspect is from a mk2 of some sort but dont know much about them to begin to identify it.

These are probably daft questions to a more experienced person but as i say im new to all this and need a bit of help. thanks

Il post some pics of the project too if anyone is interested, i know i love to look what others are doing
