The 1991 and newer US Escort's have a body made by Mazda, so that's why they look so different. The Escort GT's have a Mazda motor also, but the LX's have a 1.9 CVH, very close to your CVH, just different manifolds, valve cover, larger displacement, but no turbo's standard.
The US 98 and Newer Escorts Zx2 have a 2.0 Zetec.
Most of the Escort by me are starting to rust, I live in Minnesota, hard winters and lot's of salt is used on the road's.

My block came from America and is a 1.9cvh.
Where do you guys get forged pistons and steel rods for a turbo application?
I bet they are well alot cheaper than over here.
Can you give me any websites of where i can look for these bits please as in the Uk you get stung something chronic.
Any help would be appreciated
Cheers
Dave

Cool - I got a 1.9 American Tall block in my Fiesta
The similarities between the cars will obviously be the engine mounting points!
Oh - and they're both fwd, but I think that's where it ends!
Nice to see some of the Ford's from across the pond - torque on the 1.9 Turbo is really good!
Cheers,
Andy
