Default zetec engine issue!

my 2.0 silvertop runs perfect but has developed a rattle at 3000rpm ish.
so im taking the engine out to investigae.
first impressions are not good although it looks very pretty!
lots of metal filings on the magnetic sump plug! where the hell is it coming from?
pistons are alloy and stainless steel aint magnetic so im dreading the outcome.

Looks like piston scuff to me.

Is that araldite or mayo on the end of the plug?

most stainless isnt magnetic, unless its cheaper grade stuff. im an engineer and we use magnets to test for stainless grades

Duplex stainless? Magnetic. And expensive.

Sump plug looks a right mess though.

here is todays findings, head is off, looks as if its been a tiny bit lean coz of white exhausts valves.
i think it was piston slap.

check out the video below!

It's fooked! That's either scuffed the bores to buggery or someone seriously jimmied your piston/bore clearances

Ive run various different systems on it over not many miles. maybe 4k. it may have been a bit rich in the past but last mot it was lean apparently. i think its chewed something up and thats worn bits out with bits in the oil

Has it been using much oil? Need to see the pistons out of the block really, check ring movement, see where the damage is etc

Not a drop of oil. its never missed a beat til recently. i noticed it was getting harder to start. especially when hot but the starter was heat wrapped so i looked at the engine and it seemed a bit tight to turn. so for whatever reason it looks like its got full of filings and worn it all out. should have it fully stripped tomorrow so we'll see if there is anything obvious. hope its not the oil pump again. already had a zetec destroy itself coz the oil pump was buggered

Well its all stripped and i still have no idea whats happened. it looks like there are metal filings in the oil and they have wrecked everything. the engine was only used for 4000 miles in 6 years. had two oil changes and was perfect when i fitted it. but now its all shagged out. no1 and 4 big ends are chewed up and mains and everything else has wear marks.
Anyway heres a pic of no1 big end shells completely shagged out.

Oil pump failure, bearing wear, piston wear, has to be lack of pressure

The oil pump was brand new. i did have a brand new one fail on my last engine but that was jammed pressure valve which threw the light up. No light this time. the oil pump was an escort item. the engine is a 2.0 with oil spray jets. maybe the oil pressure was low because of the oil jets?!?! Not sure whats caused it really. i think maybe running rich started the problems off then it went down hill rapidly.
Annoying coz it never ran so well than just before these issues!

Do you not have a pressure gauge?

I'm in the minority that'll never bin a cvh for a zetec, always been overrated in my opinion. Sounds like you've had a terrible run of bad luck though chap. Wouldn't wish it on anyone.

not a pressure guage, just light.
they seem to be excellent engines as standard but from my experience they dont seem to like being modified.
bad luck aint the word, its crazy what ive had to go through with the car, debating weather to break car up and get a german car!

You'll be fine! £50 and a bit of spannering and you'll be in love again.

thats great but add up all the gasket/ bolt costs and everything else involved with a proper rebuild, plus the work to get a blacktop working with my power steering setup due to space and it may not be worth it, ive got a 2.0l blacktop on my drive anyway waiting to be removed.
may be less agro to get another silvertop, ill see once its out of the focus whether its going to be possible, plus my head is a stage 2 on my silvertop, £200 labour to get it done again.
