A friend of mine bought one two weeks ago. Totally standard E36 3.0 (single VANOS, manual gearbox, 286 PS), 1994 with full service history and only 65.000 km on the clock (~40.000 miles). Nearly perfect condition. Very nice car to run around. Have fun with a masterpiece of Bavarian engineering
But from what I've heard that E36 SMG isn't worth the money...

Incidentally, turbo upgrades to BMW's are pretty decent.
Only upgrades needed for the M50B25 engine really are rod bolts and better headgasket.
Was a car in mag month or so ago, had these upgrades and running just under 450bhp. Standard other than that really. Quite a few go that route, the M3 engines make the power easier than regular ones too.

I'm going the BMW route with my next car, although i'd rather an E30.
Also if the SMG starts to bother you, it can be convered to regular manual fairly easily. Infact its cheaper to buy an SMG box and convert with new parts than buy a used manual box usually.
Same box but the SMG version has hydro actuators mounted where the gearlever would be.
