Default xr4x4 with skyline gtr gearbox

just finished off my gearbox conversion(r33 gtr vspec) the otherday, got an mot ready for this years show season.
it was quite involved but its worth it as i have broken far too many mt75's in the past and this box is alot stronger and as a plus i can switch it to rwd if needs be or adjust the torque split via a potentiometer

its an awesome conversion, After having a R33 GTR myself I would say the gearbox will be 1000 times better than the old one.

any more pics of the conversion please mate, how much did you have to cut out where the centre diff is to clear the gearbox,im thinking of doing the same conversion to my mk4 escort estate over this winter but havnt got much space inside the car where the seat is to the tunnel and the hump for the centre diff

yeah you do have to cut a fair chunk out but the lump is still far from my seat edge,it may be tight if the mt75 lump is close to your current seat, you will have to fabricate your own craddle, the usaul drivers side mount point is completely removed

you can see here that i have used the standard ford lefthand mount point but made the craddle righthand mount meet the floorpan where it is still double skinned, that side is L shaped with 3 bolts.

if you want to see more then i have a project thread on the xroc, but i would start at the end and work backwards as there is quite a bit on the thread.

on reflection after doing this conversion,i would say the most important and most hassle is just making the box fit the engine correctly, actually fitting the box is easy part of the job.I have done a few miles in it now and rwd is somewhat fun, but i need to do get down to a rolling road and measure the torque split versus ets pressure then i can get to a track and see if its actually any better than the mt75 viscous coupling.

excellent news mr.c
i have been out tonight testing my new vw egt set-up which links into the emerald k3,works a treat,i'm still dizzy from seeing how fast i can go round a big roundabout in an industrial area near me,playing with the torque split to see how it handles and its good.

I had a bit noise from the rear diff after some traffic light grand prix the other day so I had a spare couple of hours this morning,i pulled the rear diff apart, only to be faced with broken planet gear teeth!!........bugger

good news though as the rare and exspensive 3.14 crown wheel and pinion are ok its just the rest thats fubared,I have been giving some stick in rwd since i have put the skyline box in,and the planets gears have decided they dont want to play anymore.

there is also a bit too much play on the rear driveshaft to cv joint splines,so these will get changed aswell, not to sure which way i will go with the diff rebuild but a quaife atb would be great to stop it happening again, but they are Ł550+vat on top off a seal/bearing kit.

the case has a bit of damage, but is re-useable its just witness marks from broken teeth being wedged up the side of the crown wheel.

I may look into a different rear diff but being 4wd I would have to match my current 3.14 ratio,or play with the transfer box ratio,I have not really looked but it is easier to stick with a ford 7 inch, car will be back on the road quicker, even if i have to rebuild with standard lsd again.

hes on a 3.14 ratio graham, so any std diff will not do unless its the same ratio.

yep correct if i run a different ratio diff then i would soon wear out the skyline transfer clutch plates,I think ford did produce a 3.14 7.5 inch but its probably even more difficult getting hold of one of those's than the 3.14 7 inch, the kit car v8 guys love these 3.14's and it has pushed the price up on 2nd hand units, there's one on ebay at the moment, bog standard old open 7 inch 3.14 diff Ł475!!!

remember this diff has had a lot of abuse over the years and 2wd probably pushed it over the edge.
is it worth trying another 7" std ford diff? can you swap the crownwheel?

yeah its old,the 3.14 crown and pinion can be swapped onto any 7 inch diff, but I think there's no point replacing with standard planet gears and an atb is much stronger, double the bhp and almost triple the torque,I would be worried everytime I push the car that i would break it again.its just as i'm making things stronger the weak components show up.

yep i believe they where an option on the 280's and standard on the minkers, turbo technics had the front crown and pinions custom made as ford did not produce a 3.14 front diff, the rear diff was off the shelf from ford.
