I can't believe how pointlessly destructive these idiots are, the american scrappage scheme... why seize the engine, why not give the car to the needy or scrap the car with the engine intact and let the scrap yards earn some money from it, total tossers.

the point is to reduce emissions, so if you sell the engine on, its still polluting (although arguable only replacing another dead engine so not adding to the total number)
The whole thing is a bit fucking stupid and driven mainly by the total lack of environmental work over the last 30 years!

However, it's fair to say that if the cars were instead given to people who can only afford a fiver of petrol a week, they're unlikely to pollute anywhere near as much as the steel foundries, copper processing plants, glass factories and oil refineries / plastic processing plants used to create the new car that's replacing them.

Yep recycling the engine is far friendlier than just seizing it, energy wise and therefore pollution wise. Its all driven by dollars with the excuse of lowering emissions. There are so many alternatives to what they are doing. Just sad that the end of a cars life is like the above.
Running around in an old car is actually more environmentally friendly than buying as brand new one... especially a fucking hybrid.

The raw energy required to build a new car exceeds the energy the car will probably use (petrol) in its life time (standard 10 years) (even more for new aluminium cars). The energy needed to manufacture a hybrid is far more than an average family car due the the nickel metal hydride, or lithium ion battery packs, add to this that a hybrid will most likely need two sets in its life time.
So buying a 5-8 year old mondeo for example is more eco friendly than buying a brand new prius. Even though the mondeo will have higher emissions than the prius, Crazy i know.
Glad it looks like its over, didn't like watching perfectly alright cars like the xj8 being toasted for no real reason.
