Some pics of my clio at combe from another site
Thanks to Dave on migweb for the pictures
Well it worked fantastically well at the weekend on its "pikey widetrack" conversion made from some renault 19 bottom arms to move the wheels out and some big washers on the CV joints to make the driveshafts long enough
Took it out at combe for 4 sessions and the only thing that passed me all day was rob in his astra when he started right behind me and did me on the straight then pulled over and let me past and did me again to prove a point, but with double the power thats hardly surprising, lol
Took a few seconds off my laptime on the new engine and suspension setup, down from 1:28.5 at the last action day to 1:25.11 followed by 1:25.17 this time, Im pretty confident I can get that a little lower by being braver on the brakes but action days arent the place to do it (had THREE people spin in front of me in just 4 sessions!)
Cornering far flatter now since the addition of some leda coilovers, it was hardly cocking a wheel at all and held about 6-7mph more through camp than previously
and of course the obligatory "I sat in the queue for 40 mins and the bastard starter overheated" picture of shame, lol
Have arranged to buy a williams manifold now though (valver one is a big lump of cast iron williams one is tubular) which I will heat wrap and then fit a shield on the starter too which will stop that problem im pretty confident.
Only other issue was my new trendy little lightweight race spec heater fan doesnt actually flow enough air, so I need to fit a second one for when im sat in traffic (it was cause the engine was getting hot I had to turn it off and then it wouldnt restart cause of the overheating starter when I tried to move it 2 mins later!)
Thats easily sorted too though, so overall im really happy.
Thats the final spec of the car now I think, cant think of any other engine or suspension mods that will return enough gains to justify the investment.
although I might possibly look at something to get rid of the lag when its winter and I have some time off in the closed season, but certainly for summer its staying as it is now other than the heat management changes.

Looking good
I'm always shocked by how well Clio's handle (Even after spending so much time in decent spec 106 GTi's), mate has a 16v with a forged Williams engine, a T34 and some gas, think I posted some pics of it before... That's wide tracked with GAZ coilovers and the way it turns in and grips is immense

Yeah even on standard suspension and some 10 quid off ebay secondhand lowering springs mine used to outpace most things through the bends, it absolutely lent like fuck (looked almost like it was going to tip up!) but it still kept gripping and gripping!
Look at the lean on the fucker here when it was on the standard setup plus cheapy lowering springs, and thats before ive even got to the apex on this particular bend so im sure it was leaning even more when I had
Did that M3 about 5 seconds after that pic was taken, had been stuck behind him for a while but he pulled over as we came onto the straight to let me pass.

Epic lean! We had some fun in my mates 106 when it was still on standard suspension and one of the droplinks went, gave some pretty funny handling traits... It used to turn in like a beast and also tripod whilst just driving normally

Mine seems to be ok on tyres, done about 8 trackdays on these 888s now, we took them off the rims and turned them round after a few so they could go on the other side, I reckon I'll get RS combe out of them and then maybe one more day, so cant complain really, although annoyingly they are a lot dearer to replace now, they have gone up by about 50% since I bought them 18 months ago.

Always the way, do you find you need to get them hot before they stick?
8 track days is pretty damn good really, considering your giving them a hiding all day.

Thinking about it a couple of those days were went so I was on other tyres, so its probably half a dozen so far, but yeah thats still pretty good.
I normally just wiggle left and right like fook down the first straight and they are warm enough by the first bend more or less like that, but definately they are at their peak after a lap or so of hard use.

Really basic spec mate.
Clio 16v I bought for 250 quid
Standard gearbox
Standard Williams engine other than I have bolted on some throttle bodies and an Mtech V4 ECU and Ive mapped it
R19 bottom arms to widen the track and give a little more caster than the Williams
Some random brake calipers my mate had lieing around off a 406 that I made some brackets up for (made them in mdf to mock up and got them copied in steel) with green stuff pads, on 283mm 306 gti disks
Leda front coilovers, and koni rear shocks
stripped out, plastic rear windows and sunroof
888 tyres
And that really is it, cost me about 2.5K in total, with 1500 of that being the engine and management and 280 being the tyres.
Was doug stirling's idea, he said I should have a "banker" trackday car that I could drag out when the nova was out of action that was cheap to run and low maintainance, and I cant thank him enough for nagging me into it, its been such a stressfree car to do trackdays in really, and I would have missed loads of them if I was trying to rely on the nova as thats often out of action for long periods when im doing development on it.

Testing the future
that's a very unusual approach for a pikey renault track car - most people who have them would have left the mdf brackets

Certainly looks like fun.
Interesting to see your lap times too, as i had no idea what a nippy car would do it in round there. Been reading a project (on zsoc) of a lad that races there and he managed his best of 1.17.2. Obvs his cost alot more money and is a race car, but interesting to see the difference! Tah

Was that 1.17 on slicks, cause there are a fair few seconds a lap difference from that alone typically.
People like the Nick Williams in the Stirling Broadcast sponsored escort cosworth who race there go round in under 1:10, which is just a mental pace, although obviously he'd get nowhere near that on an action day on road tyres!

Nice going chip. I know this is a banger in your opinion but a nice r-tec carbon bonnet (maybe one with vents in ?) wouldnt go amiss.
People have been having lots of luck with bmw mini superchargers too on numerous 2.0 8v and 16v engines

If I were to supercharge it I would want to use a rotrex

Im barely touching the brakes on mine so I know thats where im losing a lot of pace, but Im just not prepared to take risks under braking on an action day, seen too many crashes like that over the years.
