Fancy a swim

dash out

Loom out

Degrease

Pressure wash

Began repairing the levered wind with some dollies, lent my welder to a mate at the mo so will have to wait

A few of the start of bear metaling

At least i dont have to buy any paint

Wipe over with tack rag and thinners the out with the zinc. Have choses to leave the seam sealer of at the mo.

Bit more prep work and sanding then on to the 2pk. Off for dinner now but will be back

Had my eye on a rst but it sold. Dont know if i should go down the same route as before or something different.

Martin i love the idea of a vag turbo, is this an easy conversion? it sounds really intresting, me been a VW man at heart.
Please get back to me, any info would be great, comes down to money at the end of the day really.

Ooooooooops!

I only just read your mail! Jeez Lee! I'm loving the smoked glass, classy!

You must be just a tad disappointed? But at least it didn't go up at the MOT station.

Nice to see you've already made progresss on her. Def do what you want to it now. Best of both worlds, you were never sure if you wanted her original or to do your own thing.

Glad everyone is ok. I thought I could hear Zoe shouting at you yesterday ! lol

Bloody hell! I was just looking at this thread yesterday afternoon and the car was still smouldering! Then I see your progress pictures today - I had to go back and check the date of this thread. But it really did happen just yesterday.

Can't believe the progress you've made mate - talk about cracking on with it - well done to you!

Got no choice mate, I know if i left it there, it would just sit there and never be done.

Welding the damaged wing, spraying and maybe even rebuild the engine today if im lucky!

Just a shame the cars in negative equity now

lee, got 3 sets of coils, one new set of magnecor leads waiting to go on, some interior door trim ( the plastic bit wihich the lectric window switches are on ) and a mint bagged up steering cowling top and bottom if its any use, also my old daily 4 spoke wheel which is useable. Can do you a decent deal to help you on your way if you decide to go back down the 16i route

if you need any other parts speak to Tony Fuller on RSOC and he'll be able to tell you what is findable or not and he has quite a lot hoarded away too

Thanks mate, Im putting a list together tonight so will post it up.

and get back to everyone.

Well didnt quite meet my target today planned on having the wings done but have run out of time.

So here were we are tonight....

cut back wing

welding it up (note not a good idea to weld and take pics at same time)

Initial clean up before final welding and dolly hammering/shrinking

Would wouldnt believe this engine only has 0.01 miles on the clock

Major degrease

pressure wash

more hammering

turned it over and it all felt fine but I have decided to rebuild it anyway.
cam at TDC, belt it fubard

thank god initial view is good, all looks ok

pistons are all good and bores ok, i feared the explosion was so loud that id be seeing a hole in a piston or two!

umm wheres TDC again

head was totally fine, Ive stripped it right down and checket it all to be safe, didnt bother with pics as you have seen them all about 2 months back

Wing nearly there and with a coat of primer to help show up any deviations. will need a tiny bit of stopper in there to get it perfect.

called my local paint factor this morning and picked up 1 liter of base coat at lunchtime

"Hanger coat"

top coats

Clear coat

Waiting for the paint to bake in the lovley sunshine so got busy rebuilding the engine

Luckily i have lots of spare gaskets and even a new RS turbo head gasket handy.

Inbetween refinishing the engine i also tidyed up the tie rods etc

Engine in (again )

Ran out of time to do the wings, as im off to pick up some new bits now .

Im getting a list together so if anyone hase any bits id really appreciate it, ill do the list then let me know what you have please.

Thanks for all the kind comments
