i reckon if your earning a crust these would make epic daily drivers if your not fussed about the running costs.

just like a range rover vogue but without the reliability issues putting me off one!

Good man... bushes and filters, rear ARB brackets if yours are still standard, change of pad material and fluid and your away if all else is in good condition.

After 100k it's wise to change the rear subframe bushes too - They are a service item but don't wear half as bad as the E39 Touring ones but still do all the same and can give some interesting handelling issues when they are perished.

The bushes are £80 for all 4 but the special tool to do the job in situe will set you back another £240

Alternatively, I have the mentioned tool as I did the bushes on my 540i/6 Sport and it transformed the back end, didn't realise just how shagged the bushes were!

Stu - If you want yours doing, let me know

Consider it done - It's a couple of hours tops and easy as pie with the propper tool - It won't be half as bad a changing the steering box and converting an auto to manual

I've got a week off at the end of November so will pop over then - just get the bushes and I'll do the rest

I'm just about to change the rear subframe bushes on my daily hack E39 Touring. Going to be an all-dayer I think. Going to change the rear air suspension springs at the same time while it's off as one of them is looking a little tired.

Had the bushes delivered on monday and had to laugh at the size of 'em...

Mike - They aint small are they

The job is super easy IF you have the correct tool, if not then it's a damn sight easier to drop the subframe off the car totally to get the bushes in and out.

Shame the saloon and touring bushes are different (touring are taller) otherwise you could of borrowed the tool to do it.

Stu, these are the ones I bought for mine - They are genuine BMW items but have had the logo/part number removed from them

Cheers for that. I'll drop the subframe so I can change any other bits that look tired at the same time and give it a paint up.

And that's the same place I got mine from. Touring ones are a bit more expensive, but they are huge!

You should see the size of the propper tool to do the job, it's massive and weighs in at a hefty 5kg

I was looking at a thread on a US forum and a guy who's done his Touring has done a pretty good how-to and there's photos of it on there. Does look a serious bit of kit!

the car is completely standard.

these are the things ive been looking at that i want to change

18x10 with 285/30/18s all around
coilovers
cheapy pads are £18 but what actually gives you value for money, are pagid actually worth it?
is it worth just fitting k&n panel filters or fitting cone filters with airfeeds from the bumper......would i expect to gain any power or just noise.

also i wanted to run straight 2.5" pipes from the cats back, though will i actually gain any power or again is it just noise.

was thinking or doing filters and exhaust then coming to you for a remap, im hoping for 450bhp, 20bhp from you and 30bhp from the filters/exhaust.

Also anyone removed the cats and gained a bit of power with a remap?

Sorry for all the questions Stu but i was gonna call you today and ask the same things but dont want to waste your time when your busy at work.

No silencers as said will sound epic but fat too loud and out fo place for the car

A quick video of my 540i with only the cats and Y-Resonator in place, no rear silencers - Sounds nice and subtle when cruising round but gives a lovely V8 roar when the taps are turned on

well if your paying all the fuel to drive a V8 you may aswell make it sound like a v8!

From research the one thing id like to do is fit an alpha-n tune, remove the plenum completely and run 8 long trumpets on the throttle bodies, ill bet that would sound mental, havent found anyone whos done it yet though

It's similar to the second picture with the exception that for the drivers sdie exhaust on mine the battery tray is in the way so had to route accross the back of the diffuser infront of the tyre well - Only M5's have no battery box on the right hand side of the spare wheel

Why so expensive, is it because of the "auto dimming" feature?

I picked it up from sheffield and i loved the drive home, i averaged 28.2mpg but that was helped by the road works on the M1, a cossy may look better and have a certain rawness when you drive them but the M5 is just a lovely car to drive in comfort with more gadgets than you will ever need and you can park the M5 in a car park and still expect to see it when you come back, for the money they are a great car although not an investment like the car it replaced.
