im loving mine, its a 2001 facelift, with the same spec as stus above with a phone built in as part of the comms pack,
the wood trim is about to be swapped for the aluminmium one ive got, and the k+n`s are due any day,
im amazed at how well it handles for a big car! truely amazing imo.
and it is a crowd puller! if people know what it is, then 9 times out of 10 they stop and have a look, ive had people looking around it 4 times already last week, when i came out of shops lol,
i love the electric rear blind aswell, its soooo good for anoying people who want to sit up your ass! just slow down and deploy the blind lol

Im after an E36 M3 but after the cossie is broken I could be tempted to sell up and buy the M5, the list of features is huge and as with anything of that RRP a real steal secondhand.
What do E39 M5 break for though as that engine and running gear in an M3 would be useable for a track car too

If anyone is thinking about going to look at this one http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk...hicleRegLetter=
Seriously dont bother, I went today. Its dog rough. 6 car park dents in nearside doors and qtr. Laquer flaking around the rear spoiler, drivers door has sink marks from a repair, rear door has a repair that hasnt been repaired properly, wheels are all flaking badly, o/s A pillar is rusty, arches rusty and the full o/s is a different shade to the rest of the car. Thats what I saw on a 20 second walk round the outside of the car and I didnt look any further, just walked away got back in the car and drove home. Waste of a day for me and 280 mile round trip

I'm sure the E39 M5 is a great car to drive and the quality of the bulid and materials far superior to the '80ies Ford Cosworths. As it should be, just compare a 1988 Sierra with a 2004 Mondeo - it's allmost like two different eras of car buliding and quality. On the other hand how many other 1980 era cars other than the Sierra do you see around in the same quantity??
Anyway, as taste is a subjective thing, the E39 M5 in my book looks so outdated compared to the E60 M5. Having a 1988 Cosworth today is like having a classic car, just like the first M3 and M5 whereas the E39 is sort of in between a classic and the new model, and it just looks so old school compared to the new one... IMHO. For me I would also say that maybe there isn't enough of a M attitude to the car, it looks a little unspectacular (which obviously is a plus in many ways as well).
Maybe the problem for me with the E39 is that the new car was such a major step in appearance (which I know there are different views about) and engine that the old one got old overnight. The new M5 is just so mean and aggressive looking. It looks fast standing still and like a muscle car. Don't really love the interior though... Maybe without the E60 M5 I would have had a more positive feel about the E39 M5??
Fo me my Cosworth is an icon and a car I will allways hold on to (I hope). It's got it's shortcomings in many areas but those are not important for me because I love the car for the cult of the Cosworth and what it represented, just as the guys on here with the E39 M5.
Comparing the Cosworth to the M5 is like comparing a fighter plane from WWII with a modern fighter jet. Both doing the same mission but approaching it with very different methods and weapons...

The M5 and Cosworth cant be compared unless you get 2 very good similar mileage standard models together. Comparing a highly tuned version of one to a standard version of the other just doesnt work. Standard for standard they are both good cars but the technology and advancement in automotive engineering make the M5 the clear winner IMO. Dont get me wrong I still love my Cosworth but the two are very different breeds that cannot be compared IMO.

BigErn - I saw that one for sale and if it was closer I would have been to see it.
they are not selling at all - I have been keeping an eye out for a month now and virtually all the same cars are for sale - many at lower prices.
I have offered on two - and would have one now, but they want more Ł (no problem - I think they will come down even more before rising)
awesome cars - I hope I can get a good one soon _ I really like the Silverstone Blue.
As they are old cars now there are alot of dogs outs there and I refuse to travel countrywide on speculative trips, especially when I have a perfectly good newer 2004 Saab 9-5 Aero that is nearly as fast and comfortable, and I'm struggling to get get half the M5 prices

Which one mate, the one in Northampton?
Did you go and see the one in Mossley? Its really bad
I like Silverstone Blue too
Im very much in the mindset of not travelling more than 80 - 100 miles to go see a car. Theres nothing worse than doing hundreds of miles to get there and its a pile of scrap. My standards of a nice car obviously differs from a lot of people and after driving that far being assured on the phone its "a nice car" then finding a shitter is like being kicked in the balls. On a couple of occasions I have demanded fuel expenses due to the cars being absolute hounds. However after yesterdays great let down Im willing to try once more then Im giving up looking at anything further than 100 mile away

Been here and done this guys, good ones are surprisingly hard to find. I travelled far and wide and ended up paying for a more expensive one as i refuse to have a car with dints and damaged interiors.
As it happens, ALL the engine's and transmissions seemed ok.

Stu it seems you are right, I have rang up about a few and asked questions and it some of them sound pretty bad by phone description let alone seeing it in the flesh with a critical eye. Im hoping to look at another tomorrow then Im giving up till I can either afford a more expensive but nice one or prices come down a bit more so Ill get more car for my money
Seeing as your here Stu, does a remap do much for these cars as they are pretty much spot on from the fatory aint they??

My 400bhp cossie is alot quicker than the E39 but it has also cost far too much with failures and there is always that nagging doubt...Theres just no logic in it..
On the other hand Nothing has failed on the E39 after 4 years and 30k it even managed to hold its own against a few sports bikes having fun the other night up to 1.50.

I am of the same mind - I have travelled countrywide to buy cossies and saabs in the past - looked at alot of good ones but more bad.
the M5's are amazing cars - but I am not desperate to have a third car - I want one not need one.
I think some of the sellers I've spoke to (not all) have too high value in mind because of their relative rarity and the fact they cost circa Ł65k new- but they forget they are 8-10 years old now and cost alot to run and hence very few buyers (certainly alot less buyers than sellers) - The ones that are best value seem to be at specialised garages (munich legends etc.) - lower miles and offered with warranty etc. I am sure sellers look at these and think they can command same price - Wrong !!
I am unfortunately starting to look at other cars and my desire for an E39 M5 is fading - the wife has agreed to sell the focus ST500 and possibly go for an E60 instead.
I too will be visiting Msport devp for a remap and bushes if I get one though.

I agree with all that,a few mags prefer the old car for its handling and manual box but 500bhp is the clincher for the current one no matter what!
