Even more fantastic photos... keep them coming!

I'm so out of touch at the moment! Really must try to make some time to get out with the old Nikon.

Thanks stephen, not the most photogenic model but for this reason he's nearly always available! you're getting some great results from that welding plate!

danja, love you pics, not seen anything from you for a while.

cheers marco & matt, my remote for the remote shutter was playing up that morning so I only got that 1 shot, the sky was awesome for half an hour and the damn thing just wouldnt work at all, definately more to be had with the welding glass. Think next time I'll get closer to the power station and get some long exposure on the steam coming out, suppose thats the one and only good aspect of living within minutes of 3 coal power stations

Is it a nikon one or an ebay jobbie?

New lens today:
Nikon 105mm f2.8 VR Macro. Damn it's sharp. noted as Nikons best macro lens and also great for portraits, i think i'll get lots of use out of it. i want it for ring/detail shots at weddings and portraits.

A few quick mock ups:

Comments welcome

Matt.

commented on your flickr matt, yeah its just a cheap ebay one, i dont know why i use it, i dont need remote, just a cable release will do me, one that I can lock off, I had one but the cable kept snapping and I binned it, might have to invest in a proper one so it will last. Nice lense the 105, seen ALOT of great shots with it and should work a treat with your D3 i should imagine (jammy git )

you could always set the self timer if it happens again while you don't have a release cable, unless you're taking the shot in bulb mode. I've a wedding this month so i'm looking forward to putting it to good use.

aye, its bulb mode for the welding glass, normally 5min exposures, gonna have to stop been a tight arse and get a proper one. Good luck with the wedding, look forward to seeing the results

5mins wow! i'd stick with the welding glass, stunning results from it and better than several Ł50 filters!

personally id put it in shutter priority and start at 1/400, then as you get in to the groove start to bring it down as low as you dare, 1/60 etc. obviously depends on what your after, for panning thats what i normally do as it takes a few shots to get in to the swing of things. If its stills with rocks been spat up nice and crisp then stay around the 1/400-1/600 mark or quicker but remember the wheels will look static so you need some action else where in the scene to bring it together, flying gravel normally suffices . By keeping it in shutter (mayybe S on your camera) you choose how the action will look. Not sure what glass youve got, if it aint that fast you may struggle to expose correct at faster shutters so it may be worth putting the ISO on auto just in case to save any unexpected dark shots.

This is 1/50 f10
http://www.flickr.com/photos/41963775@N07/4017178916/
this is 1/100 f13
http://www.flickr.com/photos/41963775@N07/4017183308/
this is 1/200 f4 (it was quite dark thus the low f stop)
http://www.flickr.com/photos/41963775@N07/4016424069/
and this is 1/400 f4.5
http://www.flickr.com/photos/41963775@N07/4016428533/
not saying they are any good ( i took them last year before I really got more into auto photography i.e. panning etc) but it gives you an idea of what to expect from the different shutter speeds, obviously the faster the car the more wheel blur you'll get when your at faster shutter speeds.

Got this lens for my 450D. Its replacing my half year old Tamron wich is broken.
Going to test it today. Panning etc. Its allready better then the canon 70-300 i had and the tamron. The last one was a slow lens. This one is very fast and feels good.

good stuff, probably the last two are favourites, fair play on the pan with the broken bumper, nice and sharp for 1/80 and a car going at a strange angle

Cheers mate.

My panning is usually really shite, especially when its car I really want to picture so was chuffed to bits to nail this one.

One thing I have also found is that my panning is better with no VR, which is a bit odd lol

does the 70-200 have a mode specifically for panning like the canon version does? i'm sure the new one does but i'm not sure about the first version.

i thought it had normal mode and active for shooting from a moving vehicle.

yeah matt, it has off-normal-active like you say the active is for when your moving also. I spent a day at cadwell trying all three and although it wasnt totally conclusive the Normal setting gave the best results i.e. most consistent

Don't be saft mate lol, your images are good.

If you want some tips, I tend to opt for ISO 200-400 depending on the light, shutter priority (S) on the dial and select 1/320s and normally I underexpose my shots so set the exposure value to -0.3, -0.7 or -1.0 in the extreme.

I checked the exif data on some of your shots and they are as high as 1/125s which is quite alot slower than my 1/320s so your loosing a fair bit of time to get the sharpness and clarity in the shot.

Keep it up though, you will only improve by trying more and more...it's neverending buddy

that time of year though isnt it!, the golden hours are the only real chances of any colour in these months B&W is the way to go I reckon during these drab times.

great minds think alike, the pic of Finley had so little colour in it it was easier to change to B&W

Will try and get out for some night shots at some point, seeing as i can do so at 5pm now

Have you set the white balance to cloudy or shade in those shots? If not it might help bring the colour out.

Try setting it to cloudy or shade on days like that. I couldn't work out why all my pitures in a forrest looked rubbish and then realised I was on AWB, changed to shade and it brought all the colour right back.

Nice one Sarah, I like those few pics you posted.

Reckon a bit of HDR would work with those, mind if I have a go and post some results up?
