More like badly tuned memories. Its the huge cyl pressure from det that takes out head gaskets 99% of time.

A well setup one with no det shouldnt do a HG, esp with uprated head bolts.

Thanks for the comments

(It seems that anyone who has ever owned a R5 GTT whether its gave them problems or not, has loved them )

RS500 - I know he is pushing over 200bhp easily, but I'm not sure whether he uses it for the track???

Judging by the way the car is prepped tho, I would say he does

i put uprated headbots on but i never had it set up properly it kept over boosting to make it run right i had to take a sensor off at the top of the turbo n then it wouldnt bang when i put my foot down. oh well we live n learn

that was my old 5 it did 12.6@111mph at pod last year on its first event ever, apart from the ferrari f40 and enzo i dont think any other ferrari could match that time.

i never had it set up on the rollers, i did it all myself, it was about 245-250bhp@30psi...though on my videos i have it was running really rich so i think i could have got an extra 10bhp by getting the fuelling sorted.

apart from the back seats it was full inside and even had a rear cage so it weighed about 820-840kg without driver....its all in the launch and gear changes.

if ya want any help or advise o-dog, give me a shout cause ive built a few engines and was the first guy to run a GT28RS turbo on a 5

i did the times at renault national day in 2005, i used to have the full video saved on my dads video camera until he recorded over it
ermmm funny video, never been pod in my life first time at the lights, banged a 1.90 60ft and a 12.9 qtr@21psi my dad then recorded me in the car after while he told me my time and i was expecting high 13s and i went nuts and started to jump around like mad in the car.

was good because i did a proven 0-60 of 4.51secs and a 0-100 of 10.2secs which i thought was good for a 1.4 pushrod carbed engine

oh yeh...not trying to blow my own trumpet but i also won the renault national day frog of the pod(knock out competion) on the day aswell

it just shows wot can be done with these little cars....shame i sold it cause i know id be easily into the 11s now

Love 5 Turbos

My mate still has one but he sadly doesnt use it as he is meant to be selling it but is to lazzy and shes a bit of a rust bucket under neath now but was a beast and still is running near on 190 - 200 bhp had many a happy time in the car beating scobbys up.

Sad really but you dont see them on the road anymore i used to see them alot about two to three years ago but they have disapeared altogether now like people say are becoming a rare classic.

right let me think......

standard crank, rods, pistons
kent 270 cam
ported head and inlet manifold
piper valve springs
self modified carb with 150 main jet
GT28RS turbo with 0.63 ex housing
RS500 cooler from Pro Alloy modified to be a perfect fit with no cutting to the car at all.
water injection, bought from america(very good and cheap)
side exit exhaust

ermm thats it really, there was loads i was gonna do to it before i got rid.....really low comp pistons, 40psi of boost, that should get me into the 11s then NOS for a low 11, no need to change the rods or crank because they are both good for 300bhp+ and 9k reving(no bullshit)

it depends how fast u want to go really, a 13 second 5 is not classed as quick anymore and 12s are becoming more common

to run a 13 second qtr u need a t3 turbo, a nissan 200sx will do, front mount cooler, say a saab one, modified card, just change the jet to a 150(cost £1) run 30psi of boost and a good launch should do it.

for 12s it gets harder, change the cam, ask piper about there 'proper' group A cam, its good, slicks....mickey thompson are excellant, port the head and inlet manifold

weight saving on these cars is important, take back seats and passanger seat out before ur runs, it helps

thats about it, its not expensive car to be quick in, just dont believe the hype of the tuners products and u will be fine

Turbo Toaster - Your car sounds da dogs b*ll*cks mate, 12 secQ/M

How much was the turbo you was running and where could I buy it from, as I have just fitted a T28 from America and its starting to blow smoke at traffic lights just after 1 day of running it in (, never even got to use it ). Also where do you get your 150 jets from ???

Nice 1

where you at the pod a few weeks ago for the night time event? was quite a few R5's there really quite like these things and ive done some measuring up the R5 carburetta will bolt onto the mk1 fiesta 1100 manifold which would make for an interesting turbo conversion

to be honest u really should be fine with a basic T3 even for 12sec quarters, ive seen a 12.3 on a T3 before and stuart clarks car runs a GT25 turbo and has done a 11.4@124mph so its not all about turbo size

if it was me again, id have my gt28rs again because i loved the way it pulled but to be honest its not a good road turbo

I got it from AET turbos, and cost me £900 those guys are really good and i recommend them, but if i was u id go for gt25r and 30psi worth of boost...and i would buy the turbo from america from maybe garret direct, that way u know u are getting a good one..any good tuner will give u a 150 jet, though most will say its 2 big and want to give u a 135 or a 140 jet.....honestly dont listen to them, because a 135 is maxed at 22psi and a 140 at about 26psi, as long as u have got good cooling wack the boost up and the 150 is fine for day to day use, mine does 160miles on £10 when dont drive like a nutter LOL

Default 281 BHP and 280 POUNDS OF TORQUE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Turbotoaster - Excellent I think I will go for the 150 jet then and I will have to look into the turbo because this T28 turbo from america has just gave me the BIGGEST shock ever.

I PUT IT ON THE ROLLERS TODAY JUST TO SEE WHAT POWER GAINS THE TURBO WOULD OF GAVE ME ANYWAY AND IT PRODUCED...................................281BHP AND 280 POUNDS OF TORQUE AT 22PSI

Thats nearly 100bhp over what it was before

I think I will go Santa Pod for the last event on the 4 November for the weekend and it see what it does. If it does good then I will just get this turbo overhauled/rebuilt or buy another one from the same company.

Also the turbo never smoked one bit whilst it was the rollers, not even a sniff , so I will also see how the smoking goes.

I will put up both rolling road power graphs of when it was 194bhp and the most recent 281bhp so everyone can have a look.

right, im not trying to put u down at all and im glad u had fun on the rollers but it depends where u took it for a rolling road session....ie if it was bb tuning or ktec racing there rollers are rubbish and wont give u a true figure......u see all these 300bhp R5 turbos in max power or fast car and its load of crap....not doubting u but ive been through all this before and u will suprised what the r5 tuners will tell u

Turbotoaster - I put it on some rollers local to me which I have used quite a few times and produced realistic results every time. I know what your saying about rollers lying, so thats why i'm gonna see what it gets at Santa Pod and then maybe put it on PJ mototrsports Dyno or Weston Performance rolling road when I get back
