Default Bmw 530/535d

Hello chaps, Im looking for advice on buying one of the above, I know this is a ford forum but there are many
BMW owners here from what I remember and I expect to get better impartial advice here, than a BMW forum.

Just wondering what they are like with 100k+ mileage and what things should I be looking out for?
Im looking at 04-08 models.

Or should I be thinking about Petrol models?

Default bmws

look out for glow plug modules, glow plugs, swirl flaps, auto box surge[valve block wear-you can live with it but better if perfect] thermostat issues[2 off one is easy to do-the other a pita for what it is]
i drives can fail-if a tourer check all functions work for rear hatch as wiring fails
i have a 530 d e61 2004/04 tourer[139k on it]-and i love it-remappped,no dpf,no swirls
have just done the stats-glowplugs/module done last year
i also have a 335d-same issues can be found-these are even better and easier to service[air filter on the 530d a pita]
quaity cars,lovely to drive

I not looking at Tourers, I have a budget of around £5k. Don't really want to spend more than that.

How much does it cost to have the swirl flaps removed? Ive heard they can wreck the engine if they fail?

Default flaps

its easy diy-just time consuming to remove
i dont know how much as london labour rates will be higher than in scotland
later cars do not have the issue
its worth mentioning that the glow plug module and glow plugs do not flag a warning light-the vehicle needs scanned to find these faults-vehicle also wont re-gen the dpf if a fault is present
as the inlet manifold has to come off to deal with this[glowplugs] its ideal to do all at once-module is around £80 plus and plugs £15 each[x6] plus blanking plug kit]
its simpler just to buy one with it all done-plenty available so lots choice out there-just make sure and get a scan done of the fault codes before purchase
tourers are more sought after so less choice and more expensive so not a bad thing you dont want one ..

Default generic

generic arent very good on bmws tbh-i have a cheapo obd2 reader and it wont do bmw
i use a solus pro or laptop based delphi equipment
i also have a bmw laptop with up to date bmw prog.software on it but need to sort out port settings/latency or similar -this will do anything pre/post canbus and isnt overly expensive[under £100]

i used to have one of these
