Hi,
I`ve read this thread some times before, and know i have my own Mk4.
I`m from Holland by the way.
Its a 1.4 CL, from `87. Its sort of the same version as a Bonus or Popular.
I`m going to do a sort of sleeper aswell.
Only not an RS Turbo or zetec conversion. I`ve got a donor Mk2 XR2, so that will be the engine in my Mk4. First stock, but as soon as i have time, and finish my Mk1 Escort, i want to give the XR2 engine a little more power. Weber Carb`s, Kent-Cam kit, that kind of stuff.
My Mk4 as it is know:

Hi all well im new here I did not see a introduce yourelf thread so I guess this is a good a place than any to say hi from Finland(English by the way just got a Finnish wife )).
Anyway I never thought about Ford Escorts much and was actually going to buy god forbid a french car that I shall not name anyway its a long story and ended up buying this which belonged to my wifes mum since 1988.
I have not looked back since...it is an amazing little car even for a 1.3 it sure is nippy, I can feel every bit of the road and I love the sound albeit that rather annoying fluttering sound(is it normal for these ovh engines). Its been well looked after and no major rust anywhere. oh I nearly forgot I posted in here because I could not find a laser section sorry (or is it just the euro equivalent of bonus or popular).
here are the pics of my 1.3 laser which needs a good clean.
(dead flys not stone chips on front)

OMG this thread takes me back a good few years when i used to mess about with base models etc, not got any pics sorry but heres a breif description of my past projects, hmm where do i start....
No.1: Mk3 1.3 Laser,3dr, paris blue, 1984 B
1.3cvh, Ashley 4 branch exh manifold and complete system with 3inch tale pipe (fookin loud)
1.4 webber with K&N pannel filter
Kent fast road cam from out of a XR2, the car performed like a 1.6, i had alot of peeps wondering lol.
started off looking like an XR3i until i got hold of a S1 arch's and skirts and a set of S1 15inch 7 spokes, spax rs turbo struts and springs, XR3i brakes all round, orion grill etc.
Mk3 XR3i seats with the blue pipes (if you rememeber there was a choice of red or blue). She got sold and no idea were she is now.
No.2: Mk3 1.3L Estate, 3dr sunburst red, 1982 X
1.6 cvh from out of a race prep Mk3 XR3, twin webber 40's, kent cam,
mk4 88 spec XR3i seats, the shocks, springs, brakes etc from off the same XR3 was used on this car as the standard non vented discs and small drums were not up to the job lol,
the car rolled on a set of cloverleafs until i cam across a set of S2 RST doglegs.
The car got sold and not long after the lad who brought her off me rapped it around a tree.
No.3: Mk4 1.3 Bonus, 3dr Diamond White 1988 F
1.6 RS Turbo engine, carb and inlet housing from a Turbo Technics XR2,
Standard S2 RST rad and intercooler, T3 turbo and manifold from a S1 RST,
As the original 1.3 Xflow ran on coilpacks i decided to use the coilpacks from off a 90 spec XR3i (ran very well indeed, the edis module from the 1.3 setup coped well with 7psi boost), fuel system from off the TT XR2 (fascett solid state pump, pressure reg etc), 4inch scorpion full exhaust system (loved the burbble ), standard type dump valve as i loved the sound of them compaired to the bailey piston type (just dont sount rite to me, not needed as it was a carb ), complete S2 arch's and skirts, 88 spec spoiler and bumpers all colour coded). 16inch TSW Imolas on 215,40,16 F1's.
Sold the car to a lad from Malvern, never to be seen again (i wonder where it is now F9xxCGA from what i can remember) anyone know where she is!!.
No.4: Mk4 1.3 Popular Plus, 3dr Black 1990 G
1.6 cvh and twin webber from out of a 1.6 estate (but still on the 4 speed box lol ),
brakes and struts etc from same car,
90 spec RST recaro's,
90 spec RST front, back bumpers, spoiler, arch and skirts,
RST bonnet, 15inch 5 spoke fox racing alloys (cant rememeber the type but they were the flat spoke ones), standard exhaust manifold and system from off an XR3i with a Peco BB4 backbox.
swapped the car for a sierra cosworth rep (1.8cvh) no idea where both cars are now lol.
All this is going back years, and i mean years...
But i do feel like finding a nice tidy bonus and mod the hell out of it just for something to do .
Keep up the good work peeps.

Oh yes i forgot to mention, this car also had a 1.6 head as the original burned out a valve and the 1.6 head is what i had in the garage, so it would of benifit from the larger valves and cumbustion chamber, i think thats what made me do the rest to the car, this was my 2nd car since i past my test back in 1996

o.k thanks for the explanation I am new to the scene and have no idea. I have a hcs(ovh?) 1.3 and was wondering what I can do as basic and cheap as possible to give a better performance will the same mods that you did on your laser work on mine i.e did yours have a hcs in as well? I dont want to destroy the engine totally as its been really well looked after pm me if you like as I am really interested in changing some stuff and would like a decent list of parts that can be easily fitted by a novice that will give a decent performance boost. a complete engine change is out of the question at the mo due to job loss. Thanks in advance.
#226
No it was a 1.3 cvh not the hcs (xflow) that you have that comes in the Mk4, as mine was a Mk3, but you can upgrade the exhaust system and bolt on a pannel filter to give you a few extra horse power, this may sound not that benificial but the drivability of the car will be alot better as it will iron out any flat spots you may have, also may be better on the fuel economy too. or if not try and source a 1.3 cvh (if there any still out there) as the cvh can be modified alot easyer then the xflow, and it will pretty much bolt straignt in, thats if you want to keep it as a 1.3 for say insurance, but if the cash is not a problem then i recomend putting a 1.6 in for instant power gain. your choice and welcome to the scene
#227
thanks and thanks for the info , Insurance is quite cheap over here in Finland compared to back home in the U.K so from what your saying I think I will decide to wait for a bigger engine maybe find one during the harsh winter as it will be garaged during so plenty of time to work on it instead of wasting money on small mods.

can I say Guys what a thread, I've just sort of logged back onto this forum after purchasing another blue oval after a two year absence and was looking to post pics of my new blue oval in here when I stumbled upon this thread.
My dad had a escort bonus way back in 1989 to 1991 in Stratos silver and this thread brings back many happy memories of that car, it was not modded but it done the job takes me back to my childhood. Given me a idea to track down a bonus now and use it as a project car.

Okay just randomly found this thread so thought i'd throw something into it.
My 1.3 HCS engined Estate. POPULAR. Bit of a downgrade in speed from my old car, a mk5 XR3i 130 spec. But i like the look of it much more. This was completely standard before I got it, but was used by a fire station as a rapid response vehicle. It was covered in stickers, such as an ST stripe running down the middle, had flames going down the sides and had the words "The Red Baron" slapped on the front and back.
And it had the WORST interior I have ever seen on a car.
Not doing anything RADICAL to the outside, but it has been stripped, the bump strips removed and it has been lowered 60mm which have changed the look of the car completely. And I put in some Recaros and an rs turbo steering wheel :P
Keeping it on steel wheels, although they are currently 14s so I may move up to 15s.
Oh and the car has an RS Turbo brake conversion, and a horn that goes AROOOOGA. It's not until you type everything out that you realise how much work you've done :O

Beautiful car !! That red certainly pops out. What lowering springs are you using? im looking for some -60mm but im so confused. Even though i thought all mk4 were the same apparantly some springs do and do not fit or do they?
#237
Well mate, I was told that 60mm would be too low, but I bought them anyway basically because my estate is stripped out and has a small engine.
On a normal car I would go 40mm.
Mine are spax too by the way.
So do you have an estate too?

#238
no i only have a 3 door hatch its a couple of posts up 1988 silver laser 1.3 ohv but was looking for springs that would fit and noticed that yours sits really nice with 60mm maybe i go with 40mm i will check spax out but really on a budget and i really need to make sure getting right ones.
#239
Oh okay. I'd maybe make a thread and ask for photos of hatchbacks lowered by 40mm so you get a rough idea.
Mine would look different to yours being an estate and its stripped out.
I managed to get my springs second hand for £30 with standard shocks, so I was fairly pleased. Keep checking ebay I suppose?
