Default Towbars

Got a Ford Ka,wanted to tow a very small trailer but they never got type approval for towing. Is it likely that I could get something specially made up and then get the car approved at an SVA test place or something?

You do not NEED TYPE APPROVAL for towing, my soerra cossie has not and tows legally just obey weight limits etc and you will be fine.

Can't you just call up DVLA / whoever is in charge of the test and get them to tell you the answer ?

There are no weight limits given for the Ka.Ford never put it through the tests needed to tow.I just wondered if I could get the work done somewhere and be legal.

Default towing

The car makers do noy need to put the cars through test.
It is legislation that governs how much you can tow up to kerbweight of car basically.
The only rules are not to exceed grose train weight and recommen to keep below 80% of car weight for any trailer etc.
At the end of the day if you can buy a tow bar for it(you can) the tow bar has been tested and manufacturers are not going to drop themselves in it by making something you cannot use, and could be potentialy very dangerous.

my cossie has not been officially approved for towing but will be towing.
Just find out weight of car then you know where you stand, go to a weighbridge, thye will tell you and won't most likely charge you anything either, scrap metal dealers always have these to weight the trucks etc before and after unloading so they know how much has been dropped

Could you give me some info on where to find a Ka Tow bar then please as all the sites I've been to say this...When EC Type Approving the vehicle, the manufacturer did not declare that it was suitable for towing. It therefore has no specified towing capacity and no specified mounting points. Towing with, or even the fitment of a towbar to any such vehicle registered on or after the 1st August 1998 would make you liable to prosecution.
