Default head unit wireing problem

hi folks this is a shot in the dark really but was going to connect my head unit this weekend but the wires coming up from various places has no connector block on the end. Basicly the previous owner didnt have one fitted and now there is a mess of wire in the place where head unit should be. I.ve brought the ford adapter so head unit is ready to go but wires the other end arent. Is there anyway of identifying what colour wires do what and where they should be attached? Hope that made some sense. Cheers luke

All you need is a 12v circuit tester to work out the wires coming out of your dashboard (permanent live, switch live, earth) and then just download the manual for your headunit and that will tell you what wires are what.

The only slight hassle you might have is working out which speaker wires coming out of the dash go to which on your headunit but you can soon work it out... just use your fader and balance control on the headunit to work it out and if you connect a speaker positive and earth the wrong way round you will hear the difference!! ie less bass!!

hope this helps.

you can also work the speaker wires out on the same multi meter doing a continuity test going from each speaker terminal wire to the wires at the dash end

So the only wires i should have coming from the car are live, switched live and earth plus the speakers. However from my sony head unit i got the block that goes in the back of the head unit so would i have to cut the wires before the block then just connect the loose wires to the correct wire from the car.

its on ohms if your multi meter has a beeper on it switch it on then put one probe on a speaker terminal then the other probe on one of the wires if its the same wire it will beep!
