Got a fright today team
Was out today for a boxing day blast, the weather was just dull today, not too cold aswell which i was surprised about.
I only went out for a quick run round the local area, 40 mile,,,, ish.
Took my time for ages and hardly overtook a car, after a bit i was ok and opened it up here and there, not a bad run really and seen loads of bikes for this time of year, well sports bikes.
Anyway my fright came after i had stopped at my dads for an hour then left to go home, it was dark now and alot colder, this hadnt even entered my mind and i left the street as if it was just normal.
I got 20/30 feet away from the door and barely even touched the throttle and the revs shot right up and the back end skitted a bout a bit, i shit my pants, i was only doing about 15 mph but it would have still fucked up my bike, and my nerves for that matter. Thats the first time the back wheel has spun up on me and i didnt like i one bit man, Needless to say it was a very slow 4 miles home where i think the bike will defenatley stay till better , warmer weather

it's no fun in the cold... the temperatures uncomfortable, the tyres dont grip the road, washing a salty bikes no fun... 3 reasons to keep it in the garage imo.
Nice to hear you kept it up though it goes wrong so quickly doesnt it, especially compared to cars

thats one of the reasons i always say that bikers who only do road miles should imo get a off road bike,
ive had crossers all my life and use to the arse end getting out of shape and twitching etc ,
not saying its going to save you on a road bike,
but when i had a low speed arse out moment on my ninja i didnt panic as much as i think a standard road bike rider would , i just kept the revs the same and stuck me leg out ,
i deffo reckon off road riding makes you a better all round rider,
beef ,

I go out all year , was out yesterday myself . keep going out and you will get the feel of it. I had the back spin up on me a few times, when its cold i try a few wheelies if the back wheel spins up even when the tyre is warm its a wee bit icey/wet. I thought it was fine yesterday once my tyres were warm between 12 and 1 o'clock. I even had the bike stood on the front wheel a couple of times so it wasnt that slippy. You should do a few wet track days on road tyres.

Testing the future
probably unsuitable tyres for the time of year. what are they? on cold days you need something that will grip from cold, not a fast road / track tyre that needs to work hard to build up heat

I'm running Metzeler Rennsport and they take a fair while to get up to temp hence why I dont bother much this time of year Suppose tyres warmers would be a good idea.....a mate of mine uses them often and he recons the heat is pretty much contained once you've gotten them upto temp with the warmers on.

Sounds like you were lucky mate. I dont use my gixer at this time of the year for this very reason! Its just not worth it, and for me, it just takes all the fun out of it worrying about the chance of ice or grit on the next corner.
I partly agree about riding off road bikes making you a better road rider, but if its going to happen, being the best off roader in the world wont help you at all. I used to race motocross and have currently got a road legal WR450 thats im just using for fun and green laning at this time of year so the gixer is staying in the garage for now.
I jus dont see how people can ejoy sports bikes at this time of year personally. The risks are high in the summer as we all know, but riding in the winter just multiplies the risk 3 fold.

My tyres are pirreli corsa 3`s, obviously a summer tyre which wont go down to well in the colder days out.
The thing that got me was, i wasnt even going fast, the shock was at how slow i was going and it still done it, made me think "what if"
Baker i`d love to do a track day, hopefully next year i should do a couple, dont no if i`ll risk the rain tho
And as for a crosser, dont even go there,,, i almost cancled christmas as i want one so bad, i look at them every day but i`ve just not got enough cash for the what i want, one of my mates was talking about them last night and we might half for one just now just to get out
This winter weather is shite isnt it? i just want to go out nice runs in nice weather, im not asking for much am i

My 916 had Diablo's on and then I replaced them with Pilot Sports and both of those were great in the winter months. I'm looking forward to getting some good cold weather sticky rubber!

I rode my first bike, cbr6, all year round. My worst ever rear wheel spinning moment was in the PISSING rain while chasing my mate on his bike coming over a small crest in a street in town doing about a ton and there is a man hole cover right on the crest and as i kit it the revs pinged straight to the limiter. I rolled off the throttle and rolled to a stop.
PROPER shit it.
PROPER shit it.

My Duke hasn't even been out the garage since early December .. Rode 8 mile round trip on the one dry day we had, barely got chance to get warm.... Not fair, I bought it in August and due to the non-existant summer and going to Afghan, I have done a grand total of just over 3 tanks of fuel!!!!!! which is about 350-400 miles
Roll on Spring .. Got a power commander and a quickshifter to fit as well

Ive got Pilot Road 2's on my GSXR and there grippy all year round, had the rear wheel spin up a couple of times tho when i've been travelling along the A2 when it was freezing last week but I dont mind, all part of the fun for me :0)
Pilot Road 2's are good on the track and the road, done a trackday at brands when it was raining all day and I could ride just the same in the wet as I could in the dry ie: flatout!
