custom earplugs
i saw a feature in a bike mag with custom earplugs with speakers in and fancied a pair, but they were quite dear at £155 for a pair
http://www.ultimateear.com/motorcycle.htm
had a look at them at the bike show and the quality did seem very good with a very thin cable that they said was kevlar reinforced and what not, but i still thought it was more than i wanted to pay and wondered if i could do something similar but cheaper
i ordered some material to make some custom earplugs for £16 delivered
http://www.diycustomplugs.co.uk/diy_ear_plugs.shtml
and then yesterday got my self some headphones to cannibalise and put in there for £35 from HMV. probably could have got them cheaper somewhere, but wanted to have a look at them to see the size and design to see how small i thought i could get them
http://www.sennheiser.com/uk/icm.nsf/root/500830
i cut off the excess material from the earphones as shown below
and then made them up into the earplug material
they sound brilliant and will have the dual function of blocking out wind noise whilst allowing me to hear satnav directions and bike to bike walkie talkie could be used to listen to music and take phone calls, but i don't do that on a bike.
quite pleased with the results for £50

making them was dead easy - just put the 2 compounds together and get the missus to shove the ball down your lughole and mould it into your ear. full instructions are given with the kit
