Default ducati 996 or Gixxer 1000?

Well, I really need a bike for the summer, as I have had a licence 8 years now and never had a motorbike . I havn't had a bike before, but I want somthing thats faster than my cossie or its pointless . The choices I have it narrowed down to are the ducati and the gixxer- what you recon?
Heart says 996- awsome looks/noise/pose/handling etc
Head says Gixxer-1000 - speed/power/easier to look after etc more reliable and cheaper to run.

What you recon guys?

i think neither

have you ridden at all even though you have never owned one?

if you havent ridden then definitely neither of the above. I've ridden a gixxer thou and they are scary fast and NOT a suitable first bike IMO! if anything the gixxer 6 or 750!

agree with Chop. Just cos you passed 8 years ago doesnt mean youll be able to ride a gixxer thou If you aint had a bike since passing then you are no different now to someone who rides a moped!! Get a 600 or if youre a tall fella a 750 imo...

Go ride them both.

Buying a 1000 as a first bike is a big step but I'm not going to comment as I don't know you or your abilities.

They can get you into an awful lot of trouble though

Just for your info i dont think the 750 is much different in size to the 600 really so height doesnt really come into it

so basically a short arse like yourself can have a bigger bike in years to come

Default bike

hi ya mate

i agree with eveyone else, them two bikes are fantastic, but if you want a ducati why not go for a 748, like mine, its fast enough, got the looks and noise, but is a bit more managable to learn on, and its my first big bike,

ill move up to a larger engine when im more experienced, but at the mo, its more than fast enough and can out handle some bigger bikes

my mates just bought a 55 r6 and mines faster and out handles it,

get a duke mate, youll love it

The ones side by side in a shop i went to were different chop. About a couple of inches in height, unless the suspension had been altered

750 is set taller at the rear,

m8,get yoursell a nice last years zxr 636,theyve got good go,good fairing modern looks and cheaper insurance, dont qoute me but you wont get insured!on either the big bikes,

the zx is a bigish bike, and a good secondhand one has already taken the hit,its got good torque and handles brill, just dont go for the previous new model,as it was stiff suspendered and not as agile or easy to go fast on.

mind should be made up now then surely.

failing that ,and you pay WAY over the odds for insurance, get an r1.

well, I have had some quotes for insurance, and the 996 comes in at £600 TPFT and the gixxer 1000 at £760 TPFT

I know its probably a bad idea but I just really fancy a 996 as they have always been my dream bike. Reading a lot of mags, they recon the gixxer 750 is better on the road anyway as yo canactually use it and not scare the shit out of yourself

Oh and i'm 6'4, I make 600's look like step throughs

the gsxr is a much better bike but as above they are a realy quick bike i had an r1 and sold that to buy a gsxr 1000 i had a k4 with some trick bits and the difference between that and the r1 was vast so if you havnt rode for a while start back in slowly because the advancement in the bikes of today is scary

for a look and presence when you pull up a 996.

but be wary, 1000cc is a fast bike, and you will need to take it easy initaially.

the 750 would be a good bike, fast, handles looks good.

imo- 996, its awsome (just be careful and please dont crash such a beautiful bike lol)
