Default Any 3D modelers out there.

As title says really I'm at uni at the moment Studying Automotive design & engineering.
Part of what we do is computer modeling using Solid Edge, we also use Alias for surface modeling and AutoCad.

Just wandered if ther was any 3D modelers on here and what you think to it all. And what sort of stuff do you work on.

Seriously considdering looking for a job in it next summer once i graduate.

Cheers James.

In industry, nobody uses solidedge. Look at job adverts. For general engineering/product design, SolidWorks. For small mechanical parts and tools, Inventor. For automotive, Catia.

quite a few on the market ansys abaqus(now part of simulia)used in industry mainly, alot of them are owned by dassault systemes, you can do lots of things with them handy tools, i used them for simulating extrusions.

most of them can be picked up quickly the 3d design part is rather similar between them all

Work designing cylinder heads for Ford although not a CAD designer have experience with a number of systems,

For design learn CATIA V5, if needed Solidworks (both made by DS)

Once you learn how to model / surface you can use most systems by just learning where the buttons are.

AutoCAD is good to know although mainly used in the 2D format for layouts etc in the automotive industry.

Most 3D modelers can handle STEP or IGES formats.

most automotive designers use catia, that how we have our models and parts supplied.

we use visi in our office but in the past ive used solidworks, autocad, edgecam and hyper cad.

visi has been the best so far, (then we just convert it into catia, iges or step for our customers)
