it all depends what your trying to insure pal.

My colleague at work is 19 and not long passed his test. He bought a honda insight 1.3 hybrid thing and pays 700 fully comp to insure it.

Cheers

Lewis is right it all depends what your trying to insure.
If it something sporty and powerful the of course it goin to be high, so try some with a smaller engine and not a sport model.
When I first passed my test years ago I had a 1.1 fiesta and the insurance on that was Ł1000

From that the insurance company see a car which is notoriously easy to steal and a 3 door which is classed as more sporty.

Try going for something only your grandparents would drive for a couple of years first to get your no claims built up. I had a Renault 19 chamade as one of my first cars, not quick, not desirable and not flash, but it was wheels and better than walking. Save your money for a few years driving a shit box and then buy something nice in a few years!

Welcome to the motoring world.

Best thing is to look at things people your age wouldn't want to be driving, so not the usual Clio's/Fiesta's etc. Think outside the box.

Corsa 1.0 or 1.2 was the cheapest for my son at 17.
But 'cheap' is relative, it was still Ł2.5k TPFT after he passed his test.
Still, it does come down, he's 20 now and paying Ł1400 Fully Comp on a Mk1 Focus RS

Get something exceedingly untrendy like Daewoo Matiz, Fiat Sciecento or similar. Cars that aren't wanted by the kids pose less of a risk in the insurers eyes. Lots of youths want Corsas, Fiestas etc so as a result more get pranged.

Get your mum or dad added as a named driver as that can bring it down. Unfortunately crazy insurance premiums for the first couple of years is just how it is.

Look at a Mini Cooper.
I am deadly serious, my niece has got one just turned 17. In her name but with parents as named drivers.
Just over a grand to insure, I couldn't believe it either!

Try some quotes on various sporty models or limited edition models. You'd be surprised that some are cheaper to insure.

Sounds daft but true.

then there was the time they fucked me about for several months in a no fault claim only paying me out after I involved the ombudsman even though the 3rd parties insurer admitted fault and paid them months before...

A company worth going with then? Lol

They cocked up my payment details and didn't tell me my policy was cancelled. Got pulled and found to have no insurance.

Thanks Adrian Flux

Paid them over the phone for the deposit. Same details for the direct debit.

Unfortunately I got stopped 6 weeks or so into the policy. Given a producer and rang flux to find out where my docs were only to be told they cancelled the policy as I didn't give the correct banking details (which were correct) and they didn't bother telling me.

Took out a policy there and then with another insurer. But I wasn't covered at time of getting the producer and the court wanted to know why, so of to court I go. Explained everything and was soon to deploy on tour with the army and needed my licence, pleaded guilty and got a ban of 7 days. Guessing the judge got mopped out that morning and she didn't like insurance companies either.

Not a long ban but still a ban on my record back then and increased premiums thanks to Flux.

they messed me around when I was trying to insure a car. I've heard nothing but bad things about flux.

Used to be with bell direct, they was brilliant and only reason after a few years I stopped using them was they just couldn't compete with other quotes I was getting.

You do realise Flux are just a broker not an insurer

So if you have had trouble with insurers you have taken through Flux then it's hardly Fkux's fault, they just advised you of the price, you were free to research their policy and service.

Martin Lewis website is good to see if people have struggled with various insurers

Thats because a lot of older cars, the claims history in recent years is more relevant to premiums than the original insurance group.

Prime example, often Saxo VTS's are similar or cheaper to insure than the 1.1 shit boxes because back in the day, young lads couldnt afford the luke warm VTS so bought the shitter instead then modded and crashed the shitter ruining that models claims history.

when you phone up and go through all your personal circumstances and they then sell you a product apparently tailored to suit your needs you don't expect them to come back a few weeks later and then cancel it because of something you told them about on day 1. In my case i worked abroad for short spells. I worked for a uk company , had a bought house and address in the uk where my car was also kept and paid uk tax according to inland revenues uk resident rules but according to Adrian flux i was apparently no longer a uk resident....

That's irrelevant when it's flux that has shafted people and not the actual insurer.

Me and our lass were getting quotes before she could drive just to get an idea and the ST was the cheapest car we could find to insure. Next was the likes of Aston martins and lambo's . Also found that the newer the car the cheaper it was getting.

It's statistics made to work in thier favour, they can be manipulated to how ever you want.

It's going to be a pain in the ass but write a list of possible cars and go quoting. Once you get the cheapest on line quote then go ring around as well.

It will always be cheaper ringing. Also ring the insurer from the comparison site as well as they usually beat the online price.

My daughter (17) passed last month and the cheapest I found was Ł1800 fully comp with 1 of those black box tracker things fitted on a 52 plate 1.0 Corsa.

when i phoned Adrian flux after an head on crash with a truck that was on the wrong side of the road coming over a hill, puting my wheel up through my dashboard and ended with my car on top of a fence i was told to sort myself out and get my own recovery arranged. I got more help from the truck drivers insurer who put me in touch with a recovery company. Same with the payout i chased them for months to get the payout even though the 3rd parties insurer had paid them just weeks after the accident..

You say that but that is one or two peoples experiences.

Iv been using flux for the last 3 years. Got quoted 2500 for a standard mk5 zs, all declared I got it from flux for 1400 (at 19), I now have a mk1 frs insured with 4 years Ncb at just over 1200 tpft and a diesel jetta at 600 with mirrored ncb. Granted iv not had to claim, touch wood, but when iv phoned the flux rescue they've been with me within an hour and been very helpful,
Like I say though, theses people have had issues with claims going in

Well that's fair enough given what happened but the point I was making is that they can't be that bad or they wouldn't be able to advertise on this site
