Default driving licenses, do you physically need one?

well, do you?

i'm on the register and people can phone up to see if it's there and i'm legal, but other than using a hire company or the like, do you actually need to have a license in your pocket, in your wallet in your back pocket etc or can you simply just not get one if your's gets lost?

also everytime ive hired a car which is a quite a few times, ive just got the company to do a dvla check on me, costs a fiver

I've had to rescue my mate once over his. The police had pulled him in a "random" (LOL!) stop in his rs turbo and wouldn't let him move without proving who he was. he rang me and i popped to his house and collected the card part. he only lives 10 mins away and wasn't far from his. He told them i was coming down with his driving license, but they wouldn't believe him, they did 3 searches on him in 20ish minutes and couldn't get his info back aparently and had called for a recovery truck. i turned up with his licence, he came over then and said "oh yeah, you've just come through on the computer now" thanks for that.

Tosser! He got caught well and truely out by having me show up that was all. the car was bang up to date, had his insurance in the glovebox, everything, the car was pristine too. just looking to cause hassle for him for whatever reason.

anyways. i've never needed mine personally, but it saved my mate a night in the cells

if you are stopped and given a HORT1 (producer) technically you could be prosecuted for not producing you licence.
Which if i remember correctly is 6 - 8 points.

its an offence not to have both parts of your licence with you whilst driving,
as already stated if you do get a tug and its not with you then you have already breached the law.

so in a word 'yes' you do need to physicly have a licence

since when has that been introduced? There is nothing in the penalty points guide about failure to have documents on you and nothing on failing to produce on a HORTI resulting in penalty points. Nothing on police or dvla sites stating its an offence to not have your license on you.

The Police are entitled to ask to see your licence at any time and if you do not have it immediately, you will be ordered to produce it to a Police Station within 7 days. Failing to produce within that period of time is another offence, even if you do actually hold a licence.

RTA 1988 S164:-

(8) In proceedings against any person for the offence of failing to produce a licence it shall be a defence for him to show that—

(a) within seven days after the production of his licence was required he produced it in person at a police station that was specified by him at the time its production was required, or

(b) he produced it in person there as soon as was reasonably practicable, or

(c) it was not reasonably practicable for him to produce it there before the day on which the proceedings were commenced

so why isnt it anywhere on dvla or local police or directgov sites and why does it not say anywhere on the license paperwork you recieve eg the "about your license" leaflet etc. something as critical as that would be written down somewhere!!!

Only time my license has left the house in the last few years was when I went to Florida, and you have to take it for the hire vehicle.

I never keep any documents on me or in the car, no license ( either part ) nor insurance or anything..........didn't think it was a legal requirement in the Uk, not like in the states............don't need it for ID cos I'm an old fooker anyways.........oh to be ID'd, those were the days

You must have one on you when driving. it is an offence to carry one. Unless it is a security risk for you to do so. Over here paramilitaries used to carry out checkpoints in boarder areas, they would see your licence and if u were the wrong religion then u got a warning shot to the back of the head!! it is tightening up over here but got threatened with a producer by a spotty nosed oik with a machine gun at a police checkpoint the other night

And as a professional policeman, it is not B/S. Whilst it is not a requirement to carry it with you, it is an offence not to produce it on request.

you dont need to carry iy or anything becaus if you get caught all you need is some id ie 3 forms of no picture id or one with a pic so 3 credit cards will do, if you get pulled over forwhatever reason as long as you can prove who you are there isnt a problem but if you get caught for speeding and the want to see your licecence you get issued with an slip that says you must show driving licecence by x date

thought not

right then, so we don't "need" to show anything if we get stopped but we then have 7 days to produce the relevant documents if required by the police, so Ł20 will need to be spent
then i've got to have pics taken for more money
then i've got to find someone who won't charge me another Ł20 to sign the back ot say it's me
then postage
then STILL wait
