You'd really be best building your own if your after a really good one in that sorta price range.
My sister has got a few Specialised S-Works Frames (build usuing a specail ally material) cheap on ebay - we now swear by them. We've never had any problems with them, no cracks, rusting etc and they do often take a pounding on downhill courses (even the hardtail!).
The full sus only cost around Ł500 to be built and that includes:
-Hope front & Rear Disks
-Hope Hubs and lightwieght wheels
-Rockshox 120mm travel forks (can't remember the model)
-Hope Headset
-XC Running gear
-Re-conned Fox rear shock with lockout.
IMO Marins tend to be a little heavy for my liking - depends what your after really. They do tend to be very well built though, a mate has had one for 4-5 years and it's still in top nick.

I've found that life I needed.. It's HERE!!
I work in a bike shop and i have to say imho
diamondback are made by raleigh.. enough said
merida and apollo and any other catalogue style bikes are piss poor
marin are very overpriced for the poor spec.
kona are also trading off there good name and overpricing
Dawes make good touring bikes but thats about it.
saracens do decent bikes but not till you get to over about 1k
specialised and orange produce some amazing bikes
carrera are great value for money, halfords are the only stockist in the uk so we have to special order from spain as we cant buy from them and resell.
some of you may not agree but thats just my personal experience from fixing them and selling them.

Thats a fairly reliable spec, truvativ make decent stuff yeah, im looking at getting some of there new carbon cranks but they are quite pricey. youve got a mix of altus an acera shimano bits which are cheap to replace when you break bits and do the job well enough.
Basically youve got a good all round bike that is suitable for upgrading in the future, which is the main thing, youll end up seeing shiny bits and wanting to change to them instead, just like with a car.
