Cosworth ID and eBay?

Cosworth ID and eBay?
At the weekend I was looking on eBay and came across people selling car and motorbike I.D. such as vin plates and logbooks!!!
So I decided to put my old escort cosworth logbook on eBay as I had sold the car as a track car and I kept the I.D. I also explained that the logbook is registered to me and that I would require the winning bidders info to change it over!
But before I knew it the item had been removed from eBay a couple of people had also emailed me to say that this was illegal!!……………So how come others can sell I.D’s?
After speaking to a few people some have said it’s a greyish area in the law and others have said you can’t do it!!
I have also seen cars for sale on eBay and auto trader with different I.D to what the car actually is I.e. there was a sliver escort cosworth for sale running on a sierra logbook!
If anyone knows anymore about this sort of thing could you let me know, as I’m quite confused! (Doesn’t take much)
Please note I’m not trying to cause an argument! I would just simply like to know where I stand with this I.D thing.

Have to say mate it's a bit irresponsible selling the logbook alone. What do you honestly think someone is going to do with it ? Let me guess - go out, nick one and sell it on to some unsuspecting bloke ? Hmmm, reasonable guess me thinks.........
How would you feel buying a lemon 'cos someone sold a logbook and no car ? Exactly.................

Its illegal not to inform the DVLA that a vehicle has been scrapped so in reality you shouldnt be able to have an id to sell if you follow the law, so its not really a grey area just a poorly policed one.
Saying that though there was a guy from Aberdeen bought an id through ebay, fraud squad turn up on his doorstep next day he posted about it on RSOC site.

The Mini boys are famous for swapping VIN numbers onto new/repaired shells, but at one of the autojumbles a guy from DVLA turned up, logged the identitites that were for sale and cancelled the lot!
A log book without a car has no earthly use and nowadays it's just a pain having to do a SORN every year.
The ONLY reason to buy an ID is to go out and ring a car - ask any of the victims of car theft how they feel about someone helping that process along, even if they did do it inoccently.
