The oil return is a cinch from below with a long extension 
Just goes to show there's more than one way to skin a cat - we've all suceeded from different approaches

I gave up on it. 
Got my mate to come over and he took the manifold off completely.
Turned out it was a good job he did, because the manifold is fooked too - big crack.
Paul at North Yorks spares is sorting me out though so should get it back on the road soon.
