It's not the first EVER episode tho is it - if you watch it they keep making references to past episodes I mean at the very start he says "Welcome to this weeks Top Gear" and when talking about unleaded they guy says "we had load of interest on these info packs when we did a feature on them last october"

So I think it's just the first episode of 1989

Top gear started in the late 70's with Noel Edmunds lol

 

I thought that bit on the BTCC cars was great I love watching the old BTCC footage - manual gear shifting, RWD cars, some with big HP turbo engines like the RS500 - really shows how HARD it was back then to race! Just looking at how hard Tiff is having to work behind the wheel. Watch the vids from 1998/1999 season - just ten years on! - and it's nowhere NEAR as hard work as that, not with their FWD, limited HP n/a engines and semi-auto/sequential boxes....
