Default And I'm Now Officially An NMS Tugboat!!!

Got home at 2a.m. this morning after picking the car up from Karl.

What a difference, so smooth and responsive , and i managed 175 (on a private stretch of road ofcourse ) on the way before my ass let go .

It's now running 38psi, and like Karl says "pulls like a tugboat".

Cheers Karl you're a superstar

Ian,

Mapped on air injectors to hold 38psi from 4500 to 6000rpm then tails to a held 33psi up to the 8300rpm limiter. I estimate Jon's engine to be around 530bhp.

John,
I thought you were running Defis (with a 2 bar boost limit ), so how do you know how much higher than this the turbo is running? . 38psi is too much and could give less power than running a spot less due to the ACT being hotter at this pressure on a standard RS500 intercooler .

Mike,

Jon, now runs a SPA setup.

Good of you to tell me I'm running too much boost Mike. Glad you've had the wealth of experience in setting up hundreds of cars!

Karl,
Regarding the SPA set up then, could the 38psi just be a massive spike that the gauge has captured or does it REALLY hold this boost as you say ?

I've seen with my own eyes the diminishing returns of running too much boost and you KNOW this to be true as well . Mind you, I bet one of your intercoolers would sort it .

However, I would concur with your "guesstimate and say 520bhp-530bhp... .

Mike,

Those boost figures are from my own calibrated Budenberg gauge I use whilst setting the cars up. Jon's SPA does'nt seem far out.

It is'nt a boost spike as such, I've specifically mapped it to run 38 psi between 4500 and 6000rpm. Once over 6000 it runs a more normal 33psi.

I have mapped it this way as it gives the car a much needed midrange shove especially when changing gear and is only at the 38psi region for a short time and thus has no major problem with ACT's.

Once up to 3 figure speeds in 4th and 5th you only see the 38 psi for a brief couple of seconds when changing between 4th and 5th and then holds the 33psi.

ACT's were not brilliant and I was typically seeing 50 - 55DegC with 20DegC ambients, so I hope TOTB ends up being a cool day.

Never the less I have mapped jons with a 12 stage boost pot so he can turn it down if its running hot!

38/33 is on stage 12, stage 1 runs 30/24.

i don't quite follow this

obviously a mid range boost peak is a desirable thing.

but if it's on air injectors programmed to give the boost curve as you describe, how is it only at 38 psi for a "brief couple of seconds" at 3 figure speeds in 4th and 5th? i have no idea how fast 500+ bhp car accelerates in those gears at those speeds, but it would seem to me that if you were flat in fifth at 4500 rpm it would take more than a "brief couple of seconds" to reach 6000 rpm?

during that time, does the ACT not rise, or is it held down by the massive airflow at those speeds?

FRS,
Believe me it only holds that for a few seconds in a 500+ car. Cossies get to 170 quicker than you could believe with 500bhp, it is just at that point they hit an aerodynamic brick wall, and then the acceleration slows dramatically (hence I imagine, why Karl has done the boost tail off above 6000). 7k in fifth with 215/40x17s = 170mph, 6k is less than 150...

FRS,

As Mike has just said, the accleration in a 500+ car is ferocious. You simply are not in the 4500 - 6000rpm region long enough to suffer any ACT issues brought about by running 38psi.

I do this primarily for when changing gear as its normal to drop back to around 5500rpm after the gear change so the quick 38psi boost just gives the car a shove up the backside for a brief second!

It's rare you plant your foot in 5th from 4500rpm, with a T4 car you normally down change to 4th and use the extra revs. Nevertheless as Mike says, if you do plant your foot at 4500rpm in 5th it will be no more than about 3 seconds untill your past 6000rpm anyway!!!
