Because it's a public service - if people want mail to be sent as cheaply as it can be via Royal Mail then the government has to subsidise it heavily or run it altogether! The government thought they could palm it off to run as a company and keep an interest in it so as not to annoy the voting public without having to pay for it - WRONG! It is very hard to make a public service profitable - you either have cheap mail under a government run organisation (i.e. old Royal Mail) or you have more expensive mail but cheaper overall postage with private courier/postage companies - there is no in-between and the Government and Royal Mail/Consignia are finding out the hard way!

You could see that bad news was looming for the whole thing when the directors of consignia complained that charging more for stamps was actually going to cost them money (work that one out!) and when they stopped using the trains to transport mail between depots overnight along with job cuts etc.

Cheers,

Andy

although some good points put accross. I think I have learnt Ginge's English rather than the Queens English now

Ginge - From this thread and previous others, I can see you dont like Management for reasons like them being pen pushers and not getting involved with the lower level workers, taking too much money etc.

One point that stood out though, you think that management should be on a 1 year contract. Yes a contract is good as many Directors and Board Members have but............ from a management perspective, I would not be able to focus on a 1 year contract in a corporation. Yes in a business, say up to 100 staff, big differences can be made in 12 months. Royal Mail, Ford etc would realistically need longer term goals like 5 years.

One thing that doesnt seem to be reflected with Royal Mail is fuel surcharges. As a truck company we have to apply a surcharge to cover costs. Costs dont seem to have increased in stamps noticeably unless 1p here and there does cover it.

Service has definately gone downhill even back a few years ago but there are a lot of good posties out there. Just feel sorry for the guys who work hard and look out for the company who are affected.

If your mates are doing what you say then there a bunch of wankers who give people like me who try to do the job properly a bad name, and it's wankers like that who are fukkin up my job.
I agree i been doing this job for 8 years and as much overtime as i can doing nights collections etc it was easy when i started but now its absolute shit and a full on slog every single day i seen loads of people come and go coz they thought it was a job where you fling a few letters here and there.....WRONG!! Some of these new boys that come in take the piss ducking and diving and the mangers do jack shit about it

i dont hate mangement,,,,, i hate managment in ivory towers who delegate stupid ideas JUST to pass the blame onto others,,,,,, hate the way they use there lower managers as the fall guys and then when they realise there actually shite and they cant sit in there golf clubs half the week " entertaining clients" they find another place before they look shite and then they jump ship with no warning ( how many directors of failing companys seem to retire due to ill health,,,,,,,,, 3 directors of companys i have worked for have,,,,,,, all of them companys have been in the shite jsut before too,,,,,,,, maybe its stress )

i respect managment that work there way based on product knowlege and then the directors ect are people who take a interest in the products and learn,,,,,,, not just refer to there managment hand books

bad managment will lead to bad morale and then the actualy job thats ment to be done goes down hill

honest and grafting managment will be able to lead by example and show whats expected

best example io can give was what i heard today,,,,,,,, before ford took over our dealership there was another company that took over 3 years before

the director "poped in" and met everyone face to face,,,, thats a nice touch, shows who he is ect,,,,,, anyway he goes up to a bloke i work with and introduces him self, and puts out his hand and says, " im blah blah,,,,,,,,, this is the only time i hope to shake your hand cause the next time i shake peoples hands is when ive sacked you ,,,,,,,, so i trust i wotn be doing tht with you though

now that could be a nice thing but sounded like it was aimed as a empty threat,,,,,,,, anyway after 6 months the share holders i belive shook his hand and told him to fuck off,,,,,,, shows just what some managment are like

i prefer approachable managment that dont mind getting the hands dirty even if it disturbs there appointment at the health club

ironically i get along with my boss really well,,,,,,,,, and hes a hands on manager who dont do mangment things unless the big bosses are about then the tie goes back on for the " look like hes in control"

i hope royal mail find a solution,,,,,, if not get the working class to run it and then even though they lost money they saved on the wages
