Default Did you know this about the handbrake on a cossie ?

Was getting my shed MOT'ed today and was chatting to the guy
doing the test and got talking about brakes.
Anyway, he told me his mate had his cossie that rolled down a hill
because his handbrake was NOT on properly and the disks cooled and the
rear brakes released slightly letting it roll away - keeerrrunch

He said that, the proper way to put the handbrake on was to depress the
footpedal hard THEN apply the handbrake in all circumstances as this is
how it was designed to work.

Is this true or just a myth ?

the theory is possible on any rear disked car, if you've been hammering it the disks expand under the heat, when left to cool/parked the shrink thus release the braking pressure.

the new mini had a particular problem with this, i tink the BM fix was to fit vented discs at the rear.

i always leave mine in gear anyway so should be alright. ish.

100% correct. Try it.

In fact, to prove it, apply normally and then depress footbrake and tug the handbrake again, see how many extra clicks you get

Never before was this smiley so apt for so many...

I picture ginge with fingers like cow's teats - either that or he types with a wand like steven hawkins!

No offence dude, but try pressing the keys one at a time

It's true about the calipers like - it's obvious when you see one in bits - the leverage off the handbrake pawls is poor

Neil.

LOL easy tiger, I wasn't being nasty... I'm not suggesting you're illiterate, just that you TYPE like an illiterate

I'm struggling to make the connection between your education, house size, luck and your typing

No hard feelings here either

why would you come to a stop on a hill and need to put the handbrake on without having your foot on the brake pedal anyway?

Surely thats nothing to boast about tho? I'd rather have a big house thats worth less, than a pokey flat thats worth more Okay, okay, from a money point of view fine, but I'd still take a house

Yep my Cossie rolled away down my drive once

I had been out testing some new plugs, then I pulled up in the drive (you only need to press the brakes lightly even on steep hills to hold it there) and used the handbrake whilst I left the engine running to fiddle under the bonnet (I always leave my cars in gear when I park usually and the Cossie always went in the garage). Anyway, I finished messing, dropped the bonnet and turned the engine off and went inside. Glanced out of the window to see my freshly painted cossie rolling towards the main road and my gate post.

I ran outside and caught the car up as it was crossing the pavement/grass verge so stood behind it, using my weight an everything I had to stop it going on the road Once it had stopped I was dreading looking at the other side of the car as I expected to see dents and scrapes all down it from the 7ft high brick gatepost. Fortunately I must have been the luckiest guy in the world as it left a small scratch in the rear bumper, took some paint off my new Compomotive MOs (at the base where they stick out about 2mm more than the bodywork due to camber) and knocked the door mirror off.

The fact that is took paint off the back wheel shows how bloody close it came to taking out the entire side of the car!

So this shows you not only need to press the brake whilst applying the handbrake, but you need to press it HARD!

xantia is a interesting one actually, the handbrake is on the front callipers on these so the problem in theory would be much worse as obviously it takes less work to cook the fronts than the back!
