Default Proper Gas Cylinders for Welding - Refill Prices

Just wondering if anyone knows the rough cost of refilling and/or hiring a proper 20kg gas bottle with either an Argon or Argon/CO2 mix??

A 5 ft tall bottle of argon costs Ł90 for a fill from BOC.

Then you have your rent which is about Ł80 a year from memory.

Not cheap!

yeh thats about the correct price. Thats why i went to gasless wire, doesnt perform as well, but is ok for the odd bit at home.

if your only welding now and then, then go gasless.

if its a big job ie a car resto, you may be able to hire a mig unit with the gass or it may even work out cost effective to have a professional mobile welder do it!?

or just cough up the cash, the Ł80-100 rental is bearable, but the Ł90 refills dont last long!!

There has just been a huge price hike from BOC, we pay:
Ł40.50 for a delivery (it's still Ł11.35 if you collect ),
Ł23.50 for a Size W argon and then Ł7.20 per month rental (as we tend to use full bottles within a week, so I normally have 6-8 delivered at a time).

True. I got a letter about the "new pricing" the other day.

What the hell do you use all that gas for Mike?

That pub gas will be pure CO2. It will burn to hot for pretty much anything apart from very thick plate. Its crap for welding.

Argoshield normal is only 10% CO2 with rest being argon.

Petrochemical / food industry. We're currently doing the Premier Foods factory relocation from Droysdon (Manchester) to Bury St Edmunds, so are getting through 2 bottles a week (on site and at the workshop) doing hygienic stainless, as they have moved all their pickle, chutney and jam production to Suffolk.

Before that we did all the cooling pipework required for the computers at the Norwich Union datacoms building (I've never seen cooling like it for computers ). Which was part of the Ł60m contract through Emcor (our share was peanuts compared to the overall project value ).

We also have an offshoot company that does structural steelwork, so that we can do large turn-key projects (as in full on building erection, plus then the kitting out of the factory) .

I've been using Pup gas for years!
It's ok to weld with, but my welder has seen better days, so can be dodgy at times. My m8 is a coded welder and thought the pub gas was fine and he was getting great welds when the welder was practically new.

I agree that pure CO2 is not great for actual metallurgy but for welding cars..... much cheapness. My welding Engineer at work still laughs at me using pure CO2, but we're welding pipe, etc up to 46" dia!

I'm starting to panic a bit as my m8's oldman used to get me the bottles, but he's now passed it and can't get me them no more.

999, do you know someone who own's a pub and can exchange the bottles, or do you go to a local gas supplier?

Mike, any chance of knocking me out a 20m x 10m garage!? i've been getting crazy prices so I'm off hunting the contenent for cheaper!

Just found an advert for Rental free welding gas cylinders in practical classics, they do delivery also. I live quite near one of their branches - newcastle... they got 2 other places in carlisle and glasgow. I'll give it a try and let you know. (Anything has to be cheaper than disposables?)
